UPS Morristown begins Saturday delivery – Citizen Tribune

What can brown do for you? Turns out much more in Morristown.

United Parcel Service began Saturday delivery in the Morristown zip codes this week. An event at UPS’ Morristown facility, complete with a convoy of the famous brown delivery vehicles exited the terminal onto Morris Boulevard, led by one of the brown delivery trucks with racing flames.

“Saturday delivery is going to bring more jobs to the Morristown UPS facility,” Operations Manager Leonard Wall said. “It’s also going to provide a service to customers on a day which we hadn’t traditionally provided the service. We believe it’s going to increase the volume we can generate into this facility on a key day of Saturday.

“Our competitors deliver on Saturday and we want to provide the same service,” Wall said.

Teamsters delivered the first vaccines. Now they’re getting them – Spectrum News1

In mid-December, when the first vials of COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Kentucky, workers with Teamsters Local 89 played a pivotal role in delivering them from airplanes to arms.

“The people who took the vaccines off the planes and put them on UPS trucks were Teamsters,” said Avral Thompson, Secretary-Treasurer for the union that represents more than 16,000 workers in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. “The UPS truck drivers were Teamsters. We played a big role.”

On Friday, the vaccines came to them. In partnership with UofL Health, the Teamsters Local 89 hall in Louisville held a vaccine clinic for members, their families, and anyone else in the neighborhood who hasn’t yet been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Country roads: UPS, FedEx ramp up rural vaccine delivery – Freight Waves

Part of the Biden administration’s new strategy on allocating COVID-19 vaccines targets rural communities, which have some of the lowest vaccination rates in the country. In line with that goal as well as the imperative to speed vaccines to remote areas worldwide, major carriers have adopted innovative approaches to ensure that people don’t have to travel far to get the vaccine from a trusted source.

Since late last year, UPS and FedEx have made major adjustments to get COVID-19 vaccines in the hands of remote medical workers both domestically and globally.

Timing is everything

Ironically, a couple months before the pandemic exploded, UPS started a separate division, UPS Healthcare. It launched in January 2020. The goal was to focus on complex medical products like vaccines, as well as many others. Then the pandemic hit the U.S. hard that spring.

“We had this major disruption. So most of our attention was taking our resources and focusing on testing,” Dan Gagnon, vice president of global healthcare strategy and marketing at UPS, told FreightWaves. “We were helping the federal government set up national test sites, and we were helping states set up their COVID testing sites. We put up the tents, we’d get the kits to them, we’d collect the samples and bring them back to the labs.”
