That article just reminded me of an interview I saw with Doug Engelbart one time, where he was asked about his role in innovation and progress back in the late '50s and '60s, and what it was like. His response was basically to say (paraphrase) 'Imagine trying to explain the interstate highway system to someone in 1900; you would drive a 2,000+ pound vehicle at 70mph, and merge into lanes with other vehicles going as fast at one mile intervals.'
