Interesting read is this thread. Enjoyed many of the comments. With 34 years myself and to the OP's original question, oh yes, when I hit 30 it got easier and each year passes it only gets even more so. I joke that I'm one bad day away and it feels good to have that position so to speak but the plan has been when I hit 62 which is 3 years away, I'm gone. I said "has been" because the law firm my wife works for just merged with a very large firm and the bennies for my wife to go at least 5 more years is pretty big as it appears for the moment. If she continues so will I but come 65 I'm gone no matter what. We've now got to sit back down and run the numbers with the new scenarios and see what comes out in the wash to see if the plans stay as they are or if we adjust. At the moment I'm mentally OK either way which is a good feeling to have.

Hardest part of my job are days like today when the temps hit mid to upper 90's and the heat index rubs up against triple digits. I'm not a warm weather person at all but from late Sept. over to early May, it's good. When it starts into the 90's day after day, I start quitting day after day!

I have to say your blood pressure and stress do go down! I had planned to go 35 years and be gone in May 2016. I had 33.3 years in as a center mechanic when I decided enough was enough. After a nice vacation in August 2014 I came back to a lot of crappy emails from our manager. This guy was a real work of art. I always had a good attitude and did a good job and never let a bad boss get under my skin. But this guy was beginning to and reading my e-mails I thought "I don't really have to put up with this guy or his crap." I had turned my papers in before. Called the union haul the next day. Moved a couple vacations, worked 2 days in September and the rest was vacation and optional days. First pension check on Oct.1...
Felt weird at first but it was the best decision I ever made:)

When I retired after 35 years (Laguna), there was a little party at work (Feeder) and then I gathered my belongings and headed out to go through the metal detector.

The guard said "Hey! You got a pass for all that?" I calmly replied "I just retired... It's my last day. No, I don't have a pass... I'm walking out that door and im never coming back." He said "have a nice day." It was awesome. :-)

Before I went to work for the last time I received my first pension check. It was the best night in 25 years.

the best part about being gone is being able to sleep nights and sleep as long as I want. after about 2 months been sleeping a solid 7 hrs every night. feel like a new person and feel 10 years younger.

lower blood pressure, more energy with more sleep. getting more things done now than ever before. happier than ever and have NO DESIRE to even visit the old hub .

making plans to travel, volunteer, community projects and spending much more time with children and grandchildren.

don't even miss the big paychecks. the pension check comes like clockwork . don't have the extra expenses of gas and car repairs, take out food, laundry , etc. planned well ahead for this with 401k, IRA's, cash savings , etc. NO DEBT.

went out on top and healthy. my expectations have been exceeded.

I have family there and help with the caretaking. Cruz used to be great back in the 80's when I went there quite a bit. You can see what Gov. Brown's and the state of California welfare experiment has done to this town and surrounding areas. Our whole country will be like this if we don't do something about it.

My observation when I went there a few years ago.
Portland, OR is the new Socialist spot on the West coast.
Santa Cruz shows the approach of Socialist concepts applied.
