Am I wasting my time working for UPS?

I have come from another fortune 500 company and like the others are saying, I don't care where you go there is always a bunch of BS that follows. In fact it has been my experience that the bigger the company the more BS that comes with it.

Uh you can get your own retirement and insurance.

And to the OP, UPS is fine at part-time. Being a driver is the worst thing you can do, because it is very stupid right now (Which is why I went back part-time)

These other posters here are just poor and have to work 10+ hours a day because they hate their wifes, kids, life in general etc..

Just the opposite. I wan't my kids to be able to do something that doesn't involve chasing the clock all day and never being good enough. (I hope that job exists somewhere). Therefore I work the O/T to help them thru school and on to a rewarding career and life.

Hey everyone,

First of all I wanted to say this is a pretty cool website and seems to have many friendly people.

So, I'm 25 years old and I applied to work for UPS and I have an interview tommorow for a preloader position. I was looking for some information on yahoo and I came across this website. Unfortunately, after spending an hour reading through various threads I'm having doubts if I want to go work for this company, nevermind going in for my interview.

It seems there is plenty complaints from about every possible angle (wage, new hires stealing jobs, harassment, ect )

I'm hoping someone can give me an honest assessment of what I should expect (wage, working conditions, ect) Is working as a preloader as miserable and hard as it sounds?

Also, my potential shift is from 3:30AM-9AM, and I live in Calgary, Alberta if that makes a difference.

Thanks for your time and your thoughtful replies,

Oilerfan

I have been asking myself this very question for 21 years!

I have a feeling that the decision to go back to part-time was made for you by your inability to do the job.

Yes, the driver's job has changed and there are some of us who do work 10+ hour days, but I would disagree about most of us being poor and hating our wives, kids, dogs...

Nah I ran bonus everyday. UPS just gets more stupid everyday, I'm not going to go run bascially two routes (Let's kill this mall and at it to this guy) when slow drivers only have to run one. Or when I finish go help someone else.

I'm only here for the insurance.

and @ menotyou I watched a sup select "yes" from the drop down box of the rehire status and I was re-hired in a week and a half. Oh and I've been with UPS for almost 12 years.

By slow, do you mean "SMART"?

Actually POS is a better term. Why not bust it out and collect that bonus money while you're sitting at home?

Not every center is a bonus center. Someone else on this site once said, "It's a marathon, not a sprint." I totally agree. Go ahead, bend the rules, kill yourself everyday and find yourself old before you find yourself rich.

Because 30 years is a long time to be "busting it", and for what, so you can get straight pay. You're the reason old folks homes exist.

I work in a bonus center. If I go out with 8.5 hours of work, and get it done in 7.75...I get paid .25 gurantee streight time, and .5 hour of bonus at time and a half.

Okay, so if YOU, bust the route, you get overtime.......................and still end up in the old folks home, the day after you retire. Oh, and btw, how's the family?:happy2:

Never said I "bust out a route"..... I was just informing you that bonus is paid at time and a half. I have read that you also have worked thru lunch and ran so you can see your kids. This is where a bounus system could be benneficial to you. You can get the same pay as you would if you worked at a nice steady pace (take lunch), but yet get the chance to spend a little extra time with the loved ones.

The family is great! Just got back from a great camping trip! I was aiming to leave friday by 4:30 so that we could set up camp before the sun dipped below the horizon. Clocked out at 4:33. Got .97 clicks of gurantee time and .15 clicks of bonus. I did work thru my lunch, but I more then made up for it in bonus and gurantee.

I wish you the best with your beutiful children!! Stay safe!

Don t you realize that you are the perfect example of a runner gunner burning out. For whatever reason you are back to part-time.

We tried to tell you NO ONE cares how fast you get done. The smart ones work at a fair and safe pace for years and retire healthy and with a fat bank account. I run about scratch and have no desire to go any faster.

So far I've only had to skip about 15 minutes of a lunch. The X and I have worked out a later pick up time, which gives me some leeway.

Glad to hear you guys are all well, and that you're enjoying life, as well. The girls are surviving this mess, as am I.

Hang in there brother, I too went thru a "mess". You are doing a great job from what I have followed here and on your blog. I am sure it does not need to be said, but never ever ever loose focus on the girls. Glad you and the x are working together.

I was never burning out, it's call being in shape. I never got tired and come peak I would get a two month break. Or my breaks would be between stops drinking water, eating crackers, grapes, and beef jerky all day. and yeah going back part-time to make 6 figures in the A/C at my house is a good reason. Don't be mad you can't do it, it's quite all right old fat guy. I'm quite fortunate to have to talent to do what I do :)

Oh and The "smart" ones as you call them work way too many hours, have no life and get two full days off to start it over again the next week. Sounds smart to me all right.

You couldn't be further off on me little man. I am 6' 1" and 190 which is the same as I weighed when I played college football 26 years ago.

I have no debt and my wife and I have a net worth of a little over a million not counting the 520 acres of farmland that is worth over 5 k an acre.

Don't you have a porn site or something? I am sure you go through a lot of 'jerky' in a day.

Fair question--re-raise?

My wife lost her job as a Human Resources Director at a large music cd distributor, the cd business isn't exactly booming. She now works part -time at a local college. Her severence package contributed a lot to our bottom line, as did the UPS stock I bought before the IPO.

I have 25 years in at UPS, I deliver to the towns around where I grew up. Some days I lose more on paper than I make in a month. We cash rent our farm , and the profit is split between myself and my parents. Some years are better than others.

I also play what most would consider pretty high stakes poker at home games , casinos and WSOP events. Even on nights where I win more than I make in a month I still go to work the next day.

Just because I can afford to be lazy , why should I be? We have two beautiful daughters who we try to teach by example.

ups is a great company to work for (pay, pension, benefits..etc)..but the management here is the WORSE!! if you can tolerate these complete idiots, then yes, work here. After 25 yrs, i find myself just wanting to slap these morons in the face..I go to work everyday, complete my work, and then they complain about the most pettiest bull:censored2: thing you can think of..good luck with whatever you decide to do
