The only DRUG that will automatically DQ you is if you take methadone. drivers are allowed to take controlled substances if legally prescribed and the driver is accustomed to the side effects. It is the illegal drugs that are to worry about, including marijuana whether its legal in your state or not.. ( washington and colorado i believe?) read the master agreement people. FYI, semi-synthetic OPIOIDS(hydrocodone, oxycodone, etc) will not show up on a drug test as opiates. Opiates are morphine, codeine, or heroin).one is naturally occuring and one is only partially natural while other part is synthetic. So if for some reason a worker was tested for getting hurt at work, accident, etc. there would be no positive result, unless prescribed morphine, codeine or was using Heroin.. And as long as taking as directed and not visually impaired, the Medical review officer would then report the results as NEGATIVE. This doesnt mean its perfectly safe to take opioids, but once you do take something on a daily continued basis, the side effects are almost non existent. Now if you got a tooth yanked and go hydrocodone from a dentist, i would defintely NOT reccommend delivering until you stopped taking them. this is a very physical job and im willing to bet there are thousands of ups drivers taking some sort of narcotic for chronic pain. i know all this because i had a long conversation with the doctor who did my DOT physical. Believe it or not, the doctor said that blood pressure meds were one of the worst drugs to take if you drive for as a career.
