We call these "dingle berries". They are a short piece of chain attached to the inside of the gas cap on a package car, with a wire attached to the other end of the chain. The wire is longer than the inside diameter of the fuel tank opening, so in theory it is supposed to keep the gas cap hanging from the fuel filler opening instead of being set on the ground or on top of the fuel pump and then accidentally left behind. Problem is...they dont work worth a sh%t. If you try letting the gas cap hang there while you refuel, it will wind up falling on the ground and getting dirty. And the dingleberry makes it a real pain in the ass to thread the cap back on after it has fallen out, because you have to try and push the chain and the piece of wire far enough down the opening so that it doesnt bunch up and get in the way of the threads on the gas cap. Its basically like a 90 yr old man trying to have sex without Viagra. Every time the mechanics do a PMI, they replace the old gas cap with a new one that has a dingleberry. And every driver who winds up with a dingle berry on his gas cap winds up cutting the damn thing off. If you look around our fuel pumps, you can see dingleberries scattered around on the ground, in the trash, on top of the fuel pumps, or lying there on the concrete fuel island. I counted 5 of them just today. Are we alone here in Oregon, or are there dingleberries scattered around the fuel pumps at every UPS facility?
