Richmond police still searching for answers in UPS shooting By Karl Fischer Contra Costa Times Posted: 01/11/2010 11:04:12 AM PST Updated: 01/11/2010 01:21:37 PM PST While police arrested one party after a gunfight in front of Richmond's United Parcel Service plant Sunday, they still seek witnesses willing to explain the bullet hole in his leg. Richmond police detectives strongly suspect an adversary shot 22-year-old Vallejo resident Jerry Sanders before he ran into a residential neighborhood across the street from the UPS plant on Atlas Road. Several witnesses said they saw Sanders shoot his co-worker, 22-year-old Antioch resident Rudy Brooks, in the face, back and arm before running, police said. Nobody wants to talk about Sanders's injury, though. "It's not that some are saying they shot at him in self-defense," Detective Sgt. Lee Hendricsen said. "They're saying they didn't see anyone shoot him." Sanders and Brooks work the same shift at the plant, and were in the habit of teasing each other. Pent-up anger over razzing likely led to the shooting, police say. Brooks stood at a bus stop on Atlas about 9 a.m., waiting for colleagues to arrive. Sanders got off a bus and the two began a fistfight in front of several people, ending in gunfire, police said. Police searching with a dog later found Sanders hiding in a backyard on Oakmont Drive. The dog bit Sanders when he tried to flee, but his injuries are not life-threatening, Hendricsen said. Nor are Brooks's. Police arrested Sanders on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. They found a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting in a locker outside the UPS facility, a distribution hub that employs about 650, according to the company. Employees must pass through metal detectors to enter the building and are allowed to store personal property in the lockers. About 125 employees were scheduled to work Sunday, sorting mail for placement on trucks, a company spokeswoman said. "We certainly put an emphasis on security. There is always a checkpoint and a screener" at entrances, said Susan Rosenberg, spokeswoman for UPS in Atlanta. "But we certainly don't condone violence, either outside the fence or within." UPS will work with local police and perform its own internal investigation, she said. Contact Karl Fischer at 510-262-2728.
