Klien you actually don't get it. You may have fininshed your work for the day, but were still on the clock taking your lunch break. Which means you did break company policy. So first thing is never take lunch at the end of the day, the contract stats between the 4th and 5th hours. As for having missed pkgs communicate with your mngt team and put the responsibility on them. If they don't want missed pkgs they'll get you the help you need. If onot oh well the pkgs get missed.tommorow is another day.

YOU should have been taken your lunch between the 4-5 hs. If you where going to miss packages your either weren't following trace or your trace was all screwed up in which case you should have not followed it and told you SUP it needed to be adjusted.

I'M WONDERING WHO TOLD YOU THAT IS WAS ALRIGHT TO DRINK DURING YOUR LUNCH?? WHEN YOUR ON THE CLOCK YOU DON'T DRINK.

I wonder how many more routes ups would cut if runner/gunner/skipper/drinker/drivers like you would just stop being so ridiculous and just friggin take all of your personal time before you bring the truck back.

the bartender reacted actually in a prompt matter, he said, he'll give me a receipt for a non-alcohic beer, which I gladly accepted. And thaned him for his quick thinking.
This may be a game changer. Keep the receipt, you may end up getting your job back afterall . Besides, how did they get a statement from the bartender? The ol' "bamboo under the fingernails thing?" or waterboarding?.

When you go to the panel, hit them with the receipt and say "Don't know what y'all taking bout' all I had was a non-alky beer!

Oh , I have kept my receipt, trust me, even photocopied it a number of times !
But, I won't fight it anymore. I could though, even without the union. Since Unemployemnt office told to get the Labourboard involved. But, really, I'm not going thru a big lie to get my job back. They can have it.
As to why I didn't report for help during my run (we need to ask before 1500 hrs)... I thought I had it under control, but didn't expect a whopping 17 more COD packages were on board.
Plus after my residental drop offs, I also do country roads (gravel roads to farms), just to drop off another 2 of them, was an hr or more.

I had 1 sup told me that as long as I bring an extra pair of clothes I can go to the casino in my area. I guess nobody will notice my big brown package car parked in their parking lot with nobody inside. Wouldn't it be ironic (though I'm not stupid enough to actually gamble during my break) to win a massive jackpot on company time.....oooooh baby, yeah!

I've had several tell me, 'we don't tell you when you have to take your break and we don't expect any misses. If you can't get your commercial done only take ten minutes then and at 1700 take the rest.' when it comes to being really tight to 1700 with commercial still onboard.

I can't count how many times people offer me a beer/glass of wine/etc when I'm working. I like to drink as much as the next guy, but I usually wait till I'm home and out of uniform....

Wow...This was certainly a trolley post. Where to begin...

1. I hate you klein, you're a piece of scum and I hope you burn in hell for taking MY Canadian tax payers money and going to Florida with it. Unemployment isn't for your damn vacation fund. Maybe your next job should be running with the liberals? They're pretty good at stealing too.

2. I'm in the Calgary depot. We were just as hard up for staff as the Edmonton depot. Honestly, if klein had've stayed quiet I'm sure he could have gotten his job back. One of the only things I recall during my 'training' (HR guy giving us the answers) was NEVER drink on the job. It's immediate termination. It might have been passed by though just to hurry klein on road. Or he might have been drinking through it.

3. Alberta's trying to fix their UPS right now. It was broken for the longest time and we've been hearing 'they're looking for excuses to fire people'. We had a driver around 6 months ago rip a cars mirror off driving down the road (Calgary's #1 for hitting nonmoving objects, you'd think WE'RE the drinkers). The guy was told by management he was being made an example of and would get his job back. That's all it is right now is a horse and pony show here. The drivers (myself included) have gotten away with LOOOOOOTS more then any other UPS place I've heard of because of how messed up things were here. Now they're making examples out of anyone and everyone but everyone with half a brain (which klein seems to lack) knows that you'll get your job back and it sets the precedent for the future.

4. The same as 1 just to drive home the point that your a thief and a crook.

Apologies to anyone else (other then klein) who may take offense to this post. I just feel disgusted by people like this when there are people who actually NEED the unemployment until they can find themselves another job.

Well, by Deember, my Unemployment is long run out by then (26 weeks, you know that as an Albertan, Mike).
And , no, 3 runs have been cut in our center, in the last few months, due to the downturn. Plus the 2 subsitute drivers that we have... 5 people comming to work very morning, not knowing what to do. Optional Days have vanished for most people there (I only had to take 1, as they sent me home one morning, too). But, others were less fortunate. Mind you my 4 remaning optional days are history now. Gone.
As far as Florida, last year I couldn't go, since UPS won't allow anytime off during Decmeber, not even the first week, that my timeshare is for.
So, $750US went to waste, that I pay maintanance fee yearly for it.
I do have it listed on Kijiji, and facebook for rent. Been listed for some time now.. but no responses, except for other weeks.
As far as driving drunk or whatever you may think.
Totally 100% accident free here.
And, I am looking for employment... I think I'll get my class 3 licence, and move up a notch.
But, it's not easy right now, with students grabbing up the summer jobs... and companies not hiring, or very few.

and 1 more thing, no one is allowed to leave the country, anyways while collecting Employment ! That includes me, and i have no problem with that law at all.

And mike, who knows, I lived in Calgary for 14 years, maybe we have met somewhere, but just like you, I hope not.

Besides, Unemployment only pays about $700 every 2 weeks. Just enough to get by, not enough to save up for a trip on taxpayers money !
And btw, it's not that I didn't pay my fairshare into it !

Well at any rate, it appears your time at ups, skipping/postponing/deferring personal time was all rewarded with the opportunity to work somewhere else. Best of luck to you, may this be the last time you have to learn the lesson that the rules we all have to live with can't be circumvented with good production numbers. I hate to see anyone in your position in the current economy, but it restores a cintilla of hope that ups is actually doing the right thing some of the time.

Yes, do something simpler in life. Package driver isn't easy. Thats a sure thing. I got a friend, he works for this water and sewer company (drives that truck for a living). makes $35 hr. The truck is fully automated... he sticks his hose in the sewer, and sits in the truck for the next 30min. He chats with me during the day, since he has his blackberry along with him.
He already asks me if I had the qualified licence... but I don't. But, I'll work on that.
Might be somewhat of a stinky job, but a lot easier !
Starting wage is however around $25 hr. And thats actually darn good !

But, don't get me wrong, I did like my job at UPS, and my area, my customers, etc.
But, it was also nasty if you had misses. Got to avoid those at all times, or face sh.. the next day.
We didn't have that policy in place, to take luch bewteen 4-5hr... actually were told we can take a lunch until all businesses are done. Thats around 4pm (since you get another wack of them at 3pm airmeet).
I still look at my clock during the day... thinking where in my run, I would be right now. So, yes, I do miss it. Even after 2 months.
Thats life though, my friend.. up , my mistake, my concequences.

I take my first ten break around 11:00 then I start taking my lunch break between 1 and 2. Then around 5:00 I take my last 10 minute break. Your route should be set up so that you can take your 1 hr lunch and still get all your commercials done by 5:00 if it isn't them maybe management needs to add another route or switch stop between routes.

The reason there are problems like this is that there are drivers ie runner gunners that also will skip breaks to finish routes that should have been two routes too start. This why management cuts routes because they know that runner gunner driver A will skip his lunch to get the job done.

Yes, because nobody takes advantage of the system and nobody goes on vacation while collecting. Come on, give me a break. You yourself are about to do it. I'll see you in a few months down here pushing grocery carts by my window and keeping me awake with the 'rattle rattle' of the glass.

We've never met, I promise you.

I also know that Edmonton is STILL in worse shape then Calgary and that the drivers are still working a minimum of 10 hour days. Right now too is prime time for vacation time. Either your union's not doing their job or your management isn't. If management isn't then your union would be which is why you pay the dues. I know that our union actually gives a crap here in Alberta so don't give me the BS of, 'oh, 5 people need to go home everyday' because that's a load of crock and we both know it.

You either never worked for UPS or are just a troll. I'm going to guess a troll though.

I also assume, since you're well aware of how unemployment works that you just skip from job and job and live off of it anyways. You know, the same people we of the working class call 'welfare bums'?

If your story is true what is your point? You say you don't need the money, have given up on getting your job back and don't really care.

Why are you on a UPS employee site trying so hard to sound believable. What do you hope to gain here?

well, worked for 14 years at Alpha milk (if your a true Calgarian), you know that Alpha turned into Dairyland (dairyworld Foods first), then Saputo. Then they closed the plant down.
No, I only know EI now, since I had to apply for it.
Our management , might be different then that of Calgary.
Oh, they won't let us out the door, with just an 8hr shift. no way. They rather cut a run.
Thats not b/s at all. And there aren't many people that have optional days left. That came up in the union meeting !
Wanna call up some ex coworkers of mine ? I still stay in a touch with a few of them.
Or call the Edmonton Teamsters union, they will tell you, that optional days have ran out for many of us, because we were told to take them.

Why, I came here, in the first place (to this site), is because some referred me to it, because my story is different and unbelievable.
In hinsight, your right, I gained nothing.
Don't wanna gain nothing either.
Maybe, just to tell others : Don't skip lunchbreaks no matter what !
If I was taken back. I would make sure I take my breaks during my run (ofcourse no beer - never have ) - you can't smell like booze going to customers. Thats commen sense.
But no worries there, I'm not going back and can't go back. They don't want me back. Period.
They went thru that extra, to visit Bosten Pizza, to make sure of that.

The point is : I worked my ass off, I warned my sup in the morning, as he was giving me intown stops as extras, that I didn't want to spend my lunchhour at 7pm , in the centre , after work, again !
Sure enough, those extra stops he gave me, did it.
