Judge tosses Arab Festival lawsuit filed by Christian missionary group | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

A federal judge ruled the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office did nothing wrong last year when officers asked a group of Christian missionaries to leave the annual Arab Festival in Dearborn to defuse what was becoming an increasingly violent situation. In dismissing a lawsuit filed by the missionary group, U.S. District Court Judge Patrick Duggan said sheriff’s officers allowed the Christian missionaries to speak for more than an hour, and only intervened after the situation became violent.

“The intervention in this case was justified on public safety grounds,” Duggan said in his ruling today in Detroit. The sheriff’s officers had a right “to prevent disorder” and they acted only when there was a legitimate fear “that things would spiral out of control,” he said.
The officers asked members of the California-based Bible Believers to leave last year’s festival after their anti-Islam rhetoric and display of a pig’s head prompted some Muslim children to yell back and hurl water bottles at them.

Sounds like a bunch of idiots not much different from the Westboro Baptist Church

This should worry every freedom loving American!

“The Court finds that the actual demonstration of violence here provided the requisite justification for [the Wayne County sheriffs’] intervention, even if the officials acted as they did because of the effect the speech had on the crowd.”

You got to be kidding me? Oh yeah, this is what "free speech" gets you in a blue state.

So some ignorant bible thumpers go to a Islamic festival and cause a ruckess. The police get them out of there because their behavior is leading to a public safety threat. The bible thumpers sue, and a judge rightfully says, nope, no more money for you. They are just there to create a confrontation, not to exercise their 'free speech'.

They started this crap a few years ago. They are just trouble makers. This is one of the guys who has pulled this in Dearborn, remember him?

How many deaths of our people overseas is he directly responsible for?

So you are on line to change the 1st amendment, if the speaker does not speak with the status quo?

Nope, but inflammatory speech is not protected. I'd like to see Terry Jones in jail for being a provocateur and causing the death of our soldiers overseas.

These people are yelling 'fire' in a crowded theater. That speech is not protected. I wonder how tough he would talk if my tax dollars didn't escort his worthless behind out of the situations he puts himself in.

Texan, All of the Amendments have limitations, when one exceeds those limits, they can no longer hide behind them.

Crying in public is so typical right wing, witness Boehner. Man up.

Disagree with the content of the speech! But a blue state judge sides with violence? And that's ok? The speech is apprehensible and causes you to break the law.... It's the speakers fault? Why have a Constitution at all any more?

Dude, the judge was appointed by Ronald Regan. Does that make him a liberal in your book?

Bit of a stretch, sport.

Who cares who appointed him. That's hardly the point here. It's no wonder 51% of voting Americans support the current policies of a nanny state. The fact that this doesn't bother you is telling.

So if the content of someone's speech offends someone else..... Violence along with assault and battery by throwing bottles is justifiable? How is that not anarchy? Very typical of those who lie to uphold the Constitution I guess.

Tell you what, muleboy. Come to Dearborn this June and join them. They are sure to be there, and not to preach, but to incite. The Constitution does not give you the right to incite violence. Even Scalia agrees with that.

Ha, nice. Look I agree, you can't yell fire in a crowded movie theatre when there no fire. But agree with the "Christians" or not - no one has the right to take the law I their own hands period. Unless your angry at a bunch of loony Christians that is?

Welcome to America Muslims! Where you have the right to be offended! Can't take the heat? Go back to where they lop off your head for far less. Sheesh.

That's not what happened in this instance. A judge appointed by Ronald friggin Reagen agrees.

Rule of law, muleboy.

Do I have the Constitutional right to stand on a sidewalk or in a park and publicly express my political or religious beliefs? Yes.

Do I have the Constitutional right to stand in the middle of a busy intersection in order to publicly express my political or religious beliefs? No. If I am backing up traffic for miles in each direction and creating a public safety hazard, then the police have every right to instruct me to excercise those Constitutional rights elsewhere.

The "Christians" who brought a pigs head to a Muslim event werent there to excercise their First Amendment rights. They were there to incite a riot. Big difference.
