I don't mean no disrespect but too the people that retire, go back to school learn how to start a business since you now have a check in the mail plus extra time. Please stop working for others leave those jobs for the many other un-employed that need work, create work be the boss I know that you can do it help you fellow American's. That's my take on this subject good luck!

WOW! This is just a little bit cynical. What you suggest just isn't for everybody. I personally would not want to work for anybody ever again ... let alone do a job I don't like. But that is just me.

Some people just don't want the headaches of owning their own business and have earned every penny of their retirement.

If they decide they want to continue to work and are able to. Good for them!

This is America! It is the "land of opportunity for all" especially those who have worked and earned it. It shouldn't be the land of opportunity only for the people who are unemployed.

I am not sure you realized how socialistic those comments were when you typed them!!!

Actually, you do make a lot of sense, although I do find it a bit presumptious of you to say what a retiree should or should not do. I have at least 5 years (25) but most likely at least 10 (30) to go before I can retire and I will definitely be doing something, whether it be working for someone else or starting my own business, preferably something on the Internet I can run from home. A lot will depend upon whether my pension projections hold true and to what extent my 401k comes back from the dead and my financial picture at that point in my life. I would hardly think that one retiree working a part time job would have that much of an impact on the unemployment picture.

I can say I NEVER ever want to own a business again. My wife and I owned a childrens clothing store 20 years ago for two years. Its not all that people think it is. My hat is tipped to those that have been sucessful. Its alot of work. I had to take days off from work when somebody would call in at thelast minute. I had to go over to the store i the middle of the night a couple of times because the police called and said the door was left unlocked. Just a few things about owning a business with employees.
As far a working for somebody else. I'm going to find a parttime job with MY terms. They don't like it I move on. I don't know if you could tell from my user name but I am also a DJ. I have been for over 16 years.I work for a large DJ service and he pays me under the table. I used to work every weekend but I got burned out. Now I do it on my terms and they are good with that.
Oh and by the way. with my pension and SS I'll make the same money I was making for driving. I'll be 62 Dec 7th and retire Dec 30th

I have been retired since October 2008 after 30 years service to UPS. Sorry, I was only a clerk for all those years, but I am here to say, retirement has been great. Sure, with the present economy things have been a little tight, but I haven't seen the need to return to my place of employment since retiring. By the way, I am 61 and am probably in the best shape of my life now.

The one thing I don't like about retirement is that everybody (including my wife) wants to tell me what I should be doing now that I am retired. I feel like telling them all friend - off! (and sometimes I do).... LOL

I don't like having a schedule and I can keep myself busy doing a ton of different things and the couch and TV - NEED to get some use. Somebody has to flip through the channels to see if they are all still there!!!

I actually forgot today was Sunday (I do that a lot). ...But today was worse than normal. I asked my wife why she wasn't watching the View and she looked at me funny. She said today is Sunday. I am still reeling from that. I went 4 hours thinking it was Monday.

I do that now, it has nothing to do with being retired!

And thanks for reminding me... Gotta go to work today (Thought it was Saturday).

Me too, Lifer. I actually prefer the weekdays, but they all blend together. It's the TV schedule that's the big tip off as to what day it is.

Oooooooohh!!! Tell Mom Lifer used a bad word! Jk. So I can retire now but am I of those idiots that like my job. (plus financially not quite ready). So most of you that retired KNEW it was time (your body told you, your finances told you, you hated the job, etc.) or you retired the first day you were eligible?

I can't even imagine what I would do if I didn't drive a truck. Guess I am not ready for retirement yet. I guess what I am asking is how did you know when to retire? Easier w/double income for sure.

You did your stint, retire with pride and joy in your heart. Do something you love, and if you can make money too thats a +. But enjoy, you all deserve it.
And dont worry about dying early, just keep active. I know it happens, but hearing that just makes me want to go join a gym, when I do it. Instead I think I'll walk my dogs, and walk for fun. We have to face the fact that our bodies are used to exercise 9+ hrs a day. So we have to feed the monster.

I was thinking of quitting early (about 2 years). I was 53 with 34 years. My brother broke it down for me and made it a lot easier to digest.

He said - What is it going to cost you to get the 2 best years of your life handed to you and are you willing to pay it? I figured it out and it would have cost me about 900 K + in the loss of benefits and wages over the rest of my life and the decision was easy after that. It was the benefits that was the key for my wife and myself.

All of a sudden I did not have a problem working and actually changed my whole outlook the last two years. I had that quiet contentment that Mr. Toad's Wild Ride was going to come to an end soon and I actually savored the final year.
