Cancun, Mexico

Since Ideliver had soo much success with his Vegas thread. I'm also seeking advice for a Cancun visit.
Mostly, want these questions answered :

1)How are the driving conditions there, is it wise to rent a car, or pay extra for transportation to the sightseeing and adventure places ?

2)About the excursions (xpor, selvetica, all inclusive boot rides, Xel-ha, Xcaret, Chicka Itza, etc) Which ones are worth the money, and which are a waste of time ?
Which ones are a MUST see or do ?

3) Is it wise to exchange dollars into pesos, and pay with pesos as much as you can ? - I'm leaning that way - think it's smarter.

4) And please anything else that will make this trip as good as possible, and safe.

Thanks in advance.

He is canadian.. He should be ok.. LOL thanks again klein.

I heard that we are going to just annex Canada into the US and merge the entire country into the state of Indiana. That way, we will have the hoosiers and the hosers all together in one place.

The last time I went to Cancun was 1987, so my info would be too out dated to help you. This is a great time of year to go. Cancun is probably one of the safest destinations in Mexico to go just because of the tourism.

I only went to Tulum as a tourist site. It was incredible.
Cancun was my first major trip and we took a van taxi from the airport which (at that time) was located in the jungle. The first time you lay eyes on the aqua colored water a hush came over the entire taxi.... then there was a gasp and in unison "ahhhh". We took taxis or walked where ever we went and a tourist bus to Tulum.

My wife and I spent our time basking in the sun, snorkeling or catamaran sailing (all in the lagoon area) while we were there. It depends on what you like for water sports. The lagoon is great for sailing and snorkeling and the ocean side is more for wave sports and lots of wind. I prefer the lagoon. So pick your accommodations accordingly.

Warning - I don't care what they say - DON'T DRINK THE WATER. Drink only bottled water and don't overeat - no ice cubes. Small meals kills bacteria in stomach much easier and you will probably not have a problem. Remember - most restaurants cook with water and as long as you eat light you should be OK. A full stomach allows bacteria to grow.

Of the people I know who got sick, it was eating too much that caused the sickness. Believe me, you do not want to get sick down there... it seems to last for about two months without meds.

Oh! The nightlife is killer. It is like New Year's Eve every night. It starts around 10 PM and goes to sunrise and most nightclubs. If you get to a nightclub at 8 PM it will seem dead.

Don't go to Cancun during hurricane season either. The next four months are the perfect time to go.

Thanks UPS lifer !
Well, the hotel deal that I had on e-bay vanished on me (seller retracted his offer) NOT GOOD !

So, I'm struggeling to find a replacement now, or just forget about Cancun for a while.
However, I came accross this website today, and it's too good to be true.
(way too cheap).
Wondering if anyone has ever used thier services ?

Nevermind, I did my research on the above website, it's a timeshare sales scan ! :(

(haha moreluck) LOL - corrected it.

Just recently (last day or so) six men were kidnapped from a restaurant in Mexico and all of them shot to death. One guy was from CA. and a principal at a school. I didn't hear what city in Mex. this took place.

So many times innocent folks are caught in the drug gunfire there. :sad-little:

OK, I just looked at the stats for Murders by Gun crime:

SOURCE
Seventh United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems, covering the period 1998 - 2000 (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Centre for International Crime Prevention)
DEFINITION
Total recorded intentional homicides committed with a firearm. Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence. Per capita figures expressed per 1,000 population.

Oh, you looked up "murder by gun" and I just looked up murder. I guess murder by gun makes you more dead than just murder.
