Cargo carriers escape new US pilot rules - Financial Times

Cargo airlines run by companies such as United Parcel Service and FedEx will be exempt from new Federal Aviation Administration rules designed to reduce accidents due to pilot fatigue.

Some unions reacted strongly to the cargo airline exemption. Captain Robert Travis, president of the Independent Pilots Association, which represents UPS pilots, criticised the FAA for succumbing to “intense industry lobbying”.

“Giving air cargo carriers the choice to opt-in to new pilot rest rules makes as much sense as allowing truckers to ‘opt-out’ of drunk driving laws,” Mr Travis said.
