discuss: do unions promote laziness?

With any system out there people will exploit it. I sure know some of the guys in the unload area at my hub do. They will do anything not to work, and if your working too fast or making them look bad they will sure let you know it!

True - there are lazy people everywhere. However, in a union shop, the lazy are allowed to hone their craft without fear of retribution.

When I unloaded, I can't tell you how many times I heard "slow the #$%^&*( down - you can't get fired for going too slow, and you don't get anything but sore for going too fast."

I'm sure it was mostly sorters up on the aisle that were upset. They unfortunately are on the recieving end of idiot unloaders (I sorted 3 out of 7 years, in several buildings, so I know that is usually the case)

LOL - Actually, the sorters just bitched & moaned whatever you did (labels up, too fast, too slow, leaker) The fellow unloaders told us to slow down.

Everyone has their own personal ethics - you either take pride in your job, or you blame others for your actions. It's all about personal accounability in my opinion.

Your actions at work generally say alot about your personal life, just my experience over the years.

I wasn't raised knowing how to be lazy. I could probably count on one hand the number of days where I didn't give UPS an honest days work. A couple of days of working when I was really sick and maybe a coupe of days where I was so pissed off I didn't care anymore. Other than that I had to retire to learn how to be lazy------now I'm an expert.:wink2:

In a union shop (otherwise known as "socialism") you just need to somehow get the job in the first place and not screw up too bad, and you have a job for life. Plus you get great prices on Gatorade.

Gatorade? Where?!

The union can be ridiculous sometimes, I remember a guy walking out at break one day and the union offered him his job back 3 weeks later. Luckily he declined, one less person with seniority over me :smart:

I'm not exactly pro-union (you may have figured that out:wink2:) but I in no way believe that Unions promote laziness. I do believe that Unions protect everyone equally, which is nice for a union shop, not so nice for where I live (reality). Face it - some people deserve to be fired.

There are no lazy workers at UPS. It's simply not possible.

Think again..... known of a few "lazy" UPS drivers in my time .... Believe me!!!

I don't think the union promotes "laziness" necessarily - but I do think that it doesn't promote a good work ethic among some people.

Yes, the union does negotiate great wages and benefits - however, haven't all of you seen drivers be fired that the union fought for their jobs (and won) when they really didn't deserve their job back. (Even known of situations where the union steward really didn't think the driver deserved to be re-instated - but there was an obligation to fight for the "brother..) Some of them learned their lesson and began to appreciate what they have - others continued on in their ways and there were probably four or five hearings before the company could make it stick. When it should have "stuck" the first time!!!! Some drivers deserve to be fired for their work ethic - those drivers make it harder for the ones who are honestly trying to give an honest day's work for an honest day's wage....

I don't think that the Teamsters, or any other union, promotes laziness but I do believe that some people get away with being lazy because they know that its damn near impossible for them to get fired for it. In fact, some sups don't even bother with write ups because they know that suspensions and getting them fired would simply amount to nothing more than an unpaid vacation (sometimes they are practically paid vacations if they get their jobs back with back pay) for these people. During my short decade (and counting) of employment at UPS I've seen these types of employees in three different UPS buildings that I've been in and also at two other union jobs I've had prior to UPS. So, lets just face the facts here.....unions don't promote laziness but they sure as hell don't deter it either.

Well - I guess I should have read the entire thread before I posted my response! You said it much better! :happy2:

Lazy is not spelling correctly and using u instead of you.

Reminds me of the story where one UPSer was observing another UPSer that was carrying an optimum load of 4 packages at a time, "That guy is just plain lazy, I'm making twice as many trips as he is to move the same number of packages." :wink2:
