Do center manager's have a soul?

My brain doesn't allow me to think in terms of collectivism or groups.
To me, it's always an individual doing something.
I'll take your word for it.

You don't have to take my word for it. Just log into to this board every day and read. Either way.....there are plenty of dishonest and unethical individuals running the company.

I agree 100%. It doesn't matter how much pressure someone puts on you to do something, the ultimate decision to do it, is yours and yours alone.

Even if a division manager is pressuring a center manager to be soul-less basterd, it is still that center manager's decision to actually be the basterd or not.

center manager's are like Highlanders, they gain power by lopping off others heads.

There can be only one!

My last center manager was so bad I could careless if his entire family tree suddenly all got cancer.
<GASP>!!! Truly the most horrible, dispicable post I have ever seen on this site. I have been dealing with a cancer diagnosis for 6 months, and fighting a ,losing unfortunately, battle for G_d (for you texan) only knows how much longer. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy, which at times has included a center manager, and Preload Mgr. But to include his "entire family tree". Too bad you weren't so indecisive before you clicked that reply button.

Agreed! My spouse will become a five year survivor of breast cancer this October. We went to hell and back as a family with the numerous surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. Wouldn't wish that disease on my worst enemy!

center manager's have a business to run and cannot spend their day baby sitting grown men and women.

Yeah, they are so busy doing disciplinary paperwork that they don't even have time to run a business. center manager's do jack :censored2: to improving the company. They are over paid liaisons between DMs and on roads.

Let me give you a taste of what my center manager has had to deal with in the past two weeks. He covers two centers. In my center one of our feeder guys was involved in a horrific accident which thankfully he walked away from with just a scratch on his leg. The center manager told us that when he first pulled on to the scene he thought for sure he would be notifying next of kin--that's how bad the accident was. Last week there was a chain reaction accident in which a semi plowed in to a line of parked cars, killing 6 people---one of the victims was the daughter of a UPSer. He has had two on-car supervisors retire who have yet to be replaced and an OMS who took a week off for her son's wedding. He has had to deal with a driver in my center who had "heat issues" on road one day and "belly issues" the next. Oh, and the district decided to push our start time back to 0930.

Still think center manager's don't do jack :censored2:?

Um, yes I do!!! All you said is what he dealt with. Not one statement you made was in how he improves the business. Sounds like he just had his version of stops per car raised. We all deal with it. I've had 12 different center manager's in my 18 years here, my experience is they don't want to disrupt the norm. And lastly, please don't think my opinion has anything to do with the people that were injured in the incidents you spoke of. I know every center manager is different, but most are over paid paper pushers so far away from the actual function of business.

In general I don't think UPS upper management has a soul. Not saying each and everyone one of them. But there are enough of them out there to warrant the broad generalization. The reason I say that is simple. I've overheard plenty of conference calls over the years. Im sure plenty of others on this board have too. The upper management really puts a ton of pressure on our CMs and the crap rolls down hill from there. Why wouldnt it when you have division managers calling their underlings m...er friend....ers for not meeting stops per car???.?

The driver should have taken the time to cool off. That is definitely true. But that doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of heartless supervisors out there that push drivers to the point that they stop taking care of themselves. Maybe upper management should wake up and consider the heat. That would help. Damn stops per car.
Some people push themselves into unsafe areas so they dont have to hear a bunch of crap about how bad they are the next morning. I for one cant hear in the morning any longer.

It is always up to the individual to do what's right.
The individual is scared for his job, I guess. Takes some longer than others. Some may not realize yet, that the most important stop is HOME. Not saying you should stop at the casino, or spend untold minutes on your phone, but if you need a break take it.

You have your opinion just like I have mine. I'll keep it at that.

Hope all is well with you.

Thank you for the well wishes. I too often had feelings such as yours, although not quite so deep, in my youth. To keep it short a leopard can change his spots. Unfortunately in my position I have alot of time for reading, currently am reading You Can Heal Your Life, by Louise Hay she speaks often about hate being a cause of disease, hate to pop up on the pulpit but I believe her to be spot on. As your well phrased top line says, "You have your opinion just like I have mine. I'll keep it at that."

Yeah most of them do. You can see it, if you know what and where to look. Generally it will be on their ass in the shape of a foot.

Soul? That would be like asking what your television tastes like. Like any member of management, there is a void where the heart and soul lies. You are wasting your life wondering about the hows and whys of management behavior. Think, corporate zombie with a fancy car, a plastic smile and an empty domestic existence. That is your answer. Do not overthink this.

They do what they have to do and act the way they have to act in order to survive.

Whats sad is that a lot of them went in to management with the best of intentions. They went in thinking they could somehow "change" things for the better, only to discover that the system they bought into makes positive change impossible. They are guilty of being naive, not soulless.

Small follow up, talked to this driver again. Just a couple days before he got a talking to about being overallowed. (I know, it should in one ear and out the other). Then after this the center manager said he needed to slow down when it's hot. He barely went over 9.5 Monday and was told since he was just barely over he must of done it on purpose even though he was still -20.

Whenever I would be close to going over 9.5 I would always punch out one minute past 9.5---it would send a not-so-subtle message to my mgt team.

They could care less about over 9.5. They only care about $$$$. Go 1 minute over 10 and bang em for a time bonus, then they might react differently.
