Driver Quits

This is a bit off topic but as far as proper training goes,it takes the cake.
Someone in the cafe posted about a year ago (I think the thread was"stupid things drivers do") not sure if its true...but it could happen....
They sent a new guy out and told him to do your deliveries and do your pickups...and make sure you dont bring anything back.
He went missing. The police couldn't find him.
He called 3 days later from 3 states away to tell them he was running
out of money. He was delivering all the pkgs he picked up and surviving
on his cod money.

DS,

I posted that one and it's the God's truth. I worked in I.E. and our manager got this info from one of our C.M.'s.

A brand new driver received his training, which often consisted of the phrase "Don't bring anything back!!!!" Which meant, deliver everything you have! But this poor guy took it to a whole new level and his interpretation encompassed everything that ended up on his truck.

After his first day out, he went AWOL for three days before he called the center, cheerful as all get out, asking for a little more money to get back home on. He had been surviving on his COD $.

And he was crushed to find he had no job when he got back...:confused:1

That was by far the best real live story I ever took out of that place...:w00t:

Sorry Red, sometimes I can take things to far.

We all do at times bro! We had a guy several yrs ago quit and left the keys in the truck at the mall, and he didn't have the crust to call them and tell them he quit. Someone called and said the UPS truck had been sitting there all day.

Red, to answer your first question, Who suffers here? Yes, you have it partly right. Remember my Marine Corp analogy, the sup(platoon sgt) and the other drivers(marines) will have to cover his sorry butt. Oh thats right the sup cant help, because you'll file a grievance(remember Joe dirt, no call, no show, awol that you stubbornly defended) for the sup(sgt) working.

Red, your second question. In reference to not representing him in his 40 day prob period. Hmmmm that surprises me. When I was a shop stewart, as soon as that new employee punched in. I was there to represent him, you know, "the common laborer". What s the kid supposed to do? Represent himself. Lets say he didn't abandon his job. Lets just say he was 5 minutes late. Would you then represent him? Or would you just leave him high and dry?

Red, don't you believe in giving people second chances. This kid seems to need guidance and tutoring. Obviously, he didn't get it at home. Red, you and the other shops stewarts are mentors, role models for the younger drivers whether you want to be or not. Like you say the company is counting on you. The customers are counting on you, so to speak. Does that stewart know that you post on the Brown Cafe. Curious, if he does than Im sure he has told others in his center. Therefore, you have called this poop bird out in public on the World Wide Web(no wood shed, here folks).

Red, you said you don't have to explain yourself to me. I have been a teamster for 22 years, longer than you have. I pay my dues and are in good standing with the teamsters. I am a common UPS laborer. Its your job as a stewart to answer all my questions. Our do you just want the soft fluffy questions? This isnt Red communist China. This is America. Red, answer my questions. I want my monies worth.

Red, Last question pertaining to me bringing the info to the center manager office. Red dont forget you asked for the facts. I guess, I could have just told the center manager to bring it up on their computer screen. Anyhow, as a shop stewart 99 percent of the time you have to go to the company to get the facts. Example, accidents, theft, call ins, pay problems, etc, etc. Where did you want me to go to get the facts? the teamsters, as far as I was concerned, they were not involved.

In Closing, Red why did you tell the people in your center you post here. I believe in telling them you have forfeited your right to post as you convictions lead you. Peer pressure. Knowing that you have to go to work the next day and face the music, could be scarey. Ex. You want to side with Tie on a issue but dont, because of the poop birds in your center will give you a dirty look and you might lose their vote.

Area you are comparing apples to oranges here. Its different when someone doesnt show up for work and the bosses know about it. But its one thing to take out the route and bring back the truck and hide it in a cowardly fashion without telling anyone that the truck is there.
Area im really starting to believe that you didnt have what it took to be a steward and thats why you resigned or got voted out.

Red, your second question. In reference to not representing him in his 40 day prob period. Hmmmm that surprises me. When I was a shop stewart, as soon as that new employee punched in. Area if you were ever a steward you wouldnt have asked this question because you would have understood the contract and realized that until you have worked your 40th day ups management can disqualify you for anything they like. More importantly this kid was hired off of the street and our p-time workforce was passed up for a friend-time job opening!

Red, don't you believe in giving people second chances. This kid seems to need guidance and tutoring. Obviously, he didn't get it at home. I believe in giving people second chances if they deserve it! But this kid didnt earn the right to receive a second chance now did he. Area i brought this here to see if this has ever happened anywhere else at ups in the country. This kid doesnt come on here to my knowledge so how is this calling him out, if hes not aware of this website?

Red, you said you don't have to explain yourself to me. I have been a teamster for 22 years, longer than you have. I pay my dues and are in good standing with the teamsters. Your right area, its my job to answer your questions! AT WORK not here on this site! Im not your steward here, im a upser talking about things that effect me at work. I do chose to help people out with answers to their union questions from time to time. If you were a steward than why would you have to ask for an answer? Dont you know the contract?

Red, Last question pertaining to me bringing the info to the center manager office. Red dont forget you asked for the facts. So you are telling us that you will trust what your manager and ups accountant think the truth is? How come you didnt invite the ie guy in to get his opinion? 99% i get the facts from the grievant or witnesses, 99% of the time i get lies from ups management on the case or falsified records, and hear say! If the teamsters were not involved then how did you feel that ups was involved?

In Closing, Red why did you tell the people in your center you post here. I believe in telling them you have forfeited your right to post as you convictions lead you. Peer pressure. If you think that i act diifferently as a steward to stay a steward you have lost your mind. Being a steward is a thankless job, even when you win for someone they are not happy because they should have gotten more. I represent the contract and not the individual and if they really were not happy with me being me than i hope they would vote me out as a steward. I cannot bring myself to resign as a steward so i sometimes really wish that i would get voted out but it doesnt happen, who knows maybe oneday, but ubtil then i have accepted a job to represent the contract and until that day comes thats what i will do!

Red, I agree that being a steward is a thankless job. I do take my hat off to you for sticking with it. One thing, that made me quit and I ll use the word quit was the extra time it took. We as drivers are strapped for time. Being a stewart requires more time, yes you are on the clock, but that didn't matter to me. In the mornings and dont get me wrong I gave my 110% would have to stay behind with the accused in the sups office while all the other drivers rolled on out. I believe, now(we have staggered start times) the steward punches in like 10 or 15 minutes before start time depending on the grievances. After attending to my shop steward duties I would have to play catch up on my air and delivers. I have aquired many short cuts on my route so I easily made up the time and then some. Wink Wink . Red, I do apologize. I prefer not to go the confrontational route, but may have slipped back into it to a degree.

About representing the newbie driver in his first 40 days. When I started it was 30. I believe its longer now because of the course. As you can see Im a little rusty. I basicaly now just come in and work punch to punch and leave per say(selfish me,LOL). Eat your heart out. I envied sometimes the other drivers leaving, not having to stick around. Even in the evenings I sometimes would have to represent one of the local sort employees, due to the fact we had no pt shift steward. Red, I regret the fact that all we ever due is fuss back and forth. I am partly to blame for this. Ok, more than partly LOL but it takes two to tangle. I intend to put our relationship back on the right track, hopefully. I know at times we will still disagree, but if it' s packaged correctly it will go thru the sort process undamaged. God bless and take care, Area 43 ps tired almost forgot, On newbie drivers, I have gone with them to the sups office during their probationary period and got them off on minor offenses. ex late air del.,misdeliverd pkg,etc etc. Yes, the company has the right to dump him for any reason that is why I have a non confrontational approach and work together. It sometimes helps to your advantage especially when your at the mercy of the(UPS) court per say.

Heres an update. Ups has brought this kid back as an air driver on the night shift now! Can you believe this? I bet you this kid has a friend higher up in management somewhere! How can ups ever discipline us for this after doing this? UNBELIEVABLE!

Part of UPS's NO QUIT POLICY... Seriously, I have heard of this brought up with new hires... Our Center had monthly CERC meetings about Employee Retention...

Yep, same here. I heard about a guy that took a swing on a p/t sup and got his job back! P/t supe wasn't fired, despite throwing a punch AND connecting with the hourly. I work for the p/t supe and see the hourly when I double. Hourly is still pretty peeved at the supe. The supe walks away every time the hourly's name comes up, so he obviously hasn't forgotten, either. -Rocky

That happend here during peak two years ago... The preloader looked like a heavy weight fighter and the PT Supe looked like Michael J Fox in size... No blows connected but the preloader was escorted off property... About three weeks later the union got the preloader his job back...

As far as being non confrontational, it took me some time to learn that, but it is true sometimes there are certainly situations that as stewards we have little to work with, not to mention no one wants to have a constant pi_ _ing contest. Also more often than not the stewarding doesn't end when we clock out, but goes home with us, but no one makes us do it, most of us do it because we liek to help others etc...I have been a steward for roughly 18 yrs now, and I really don't know what's it's like not to be one. lol

Its a good policy--in theory. It might explain why my supe refused my verbal two weeks. He demanded an explanation and I gave it to him, citing a school schedule conflict. It was really kinda funny to see this guy flip a little, committing to "working something out." He asked for my school schedule and a few pieces of paperwork for his boss to support schedule flexibility. I'm waiting on an official schedule from my school on school letterhead, etc--due in a week or so--to give him. Satellite, it looks like UPS won't let me go so easily. My boss is slightly more intelligent than the average supe, though. -Rocky

I've had days that I felt like quitting. I think to myself....this company is 100 years old, somebody did this job before me and I can do it too.

Hi Amy, A big "Welcome" to the Brown Cafe. Hey, be nice to my cat(that used to be my avatar pic). I know you will. Amy you seem like a nice Lady. Keep up the posting. Also, one thing about my ex cat, he does not like to be in a cage. He needs his freedom. As you can tell by his pic he dosen't smile much. I always would try and put a smile on his face but I guess his just chronically in a bad mood all the time. Amy good luck with my ex cat. Well, I still have feelings for him, the poor kitty. sincerely area43
