FedEx closing area facility, eliminating 222 jobs By Chelsey Levingston, Staff Writer Updated 6:16 PM Monday, November 29, 2010 WEST CHESTER TWP. — More than 200 jobs will go away in January when an area FedEx facility closes. FedEx sent a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice to Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Monday, Nov. 29, that it will close its National LTL facility, 6431 Centre Park Drive, on Jan. 29 of next year. It has already notified 222 employees of their eliminated positions. The closing, according to the notice, is permanent. Closing the facility is part of a national realignment of FedEx Freight to integrate FedEx National LTL or less-than-truckload, said Ann Soccomano, a spokeswoman for FedEx. In September it was announced FedEx Freight will integrate its short haul trucking and long haul trucking networks, effective Jan. 30, 2011. For the past four years, the short haul and long haul networks have operated separately following the acquisition of another trucking company in 2006, Watkins Motor Lines, that became the National LTL service, Soccomano said. Short haul trucking means a distance of 1,600 miles or less and long haul means more than 1,600 miles, she said. About 100 FedEx national long haul services facilities will close nationwide, shedding a total approximately 1,700 jobs, according to the first quarter earning statements of the delivery company. “The purpose is to make it much more efficient and convenient for the customer,” she added. Some employees will be offered other jobs with FedEx Freight or other employees can apply for jobs in other FedEx companies. Discussions have been ongoing with employees since September. “A number of them we expect will be moving into other positions with FedEx,” Soccomano said.
