has anyone ever brawled with a customer???

Just last week I got blindsided by an ornery customer. When he signed his name with the usual illegible scribble, the exchange went....

Me: 'Your last name is...'

Him: 'I wrote it right on there...'

Me: 'I cannot read what you wrote....'

Him: (disgustingly) 'RRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrr.......OOOOooooooooo.....Teeeeeeeee.......Teeeeeee....'

...as he proceeded to spell out his entire last name in long, drawn-out letters, as though I was some kind of idiot.

That's about the closest I've come to feeding a customer a diad breakfast.

A guy blocked me in nose to nose at a stop. After he went through his paperwork for a few minutes- I gave him a quick toot to see if he was going to move. He flips me off, got out of his van and challenged me, so I stepped down, he grabbed my collar so I had to drag him through the snow. I couldn't punch the guy though. I went back into the stop to call police and the center manager. The customer told me the guy said watch me piss the UPS guy off. The funny thing is- I was having such a good day I wasn't even mad he blocked me in. When police contacted him, he said I started it. Come to find out-he was on all kinds of medication.

^^I had a guy kind of do this to me one day. Some truck driver who I pulled up next to all of a sudden wanted to be a d!ck about UPS was always hogging up the docks everywhere he went (cause we take so long:rolleyes:). I said, "all I wanted to know is how long you would be. If you were going to be long I would leave and come back." He got all pissed off bitching about UPS being overpaid and whatnot. Out of nowhere he tells me to step out of the truck and we could settle this. I was like, what the hell. When I got down and out and he realized that I was a heck of a lot bigger than him by about 6 inches and about 80 lbs. he turned aorund telling me to friend-off and flipping me off and cussing at me and telling me to wait my friend-in turn. I left and came back later.

These guys are jealous because they dont get paid as much as us.I know this because at our union meetings guys from Roadway,Yellow, and ABF are always complaining about us making $28 an hour.

FromBlueToBrown, just curious, when you heard the racial slur from your driver, did you think that perhaps this is something wrong and that perhaps this is something that a professional should not do?

Next time I see one of them pulled over taking a nap, I'll wake him up and ask what he thinks about our rate of pay.

if i ever came to blows on the street, i would drag his crippled ass into the car call ups and police and say he came in my car while i was sorting and tried to steal package!!! that would be ok if your defending the almighty parcel lol:laughing:

We should complain that Roadway, Yellow and ABF make 23$ an hour. They spend most of their time sitting in the cab looking at paperwork.

Pretty funny to see a 20 something 5'0 blonde girl driver go toe to toe with a 6' 250lb black man.

LOL! This reminds me of a delivery I had to a local porn shop ( I always try to park in the back off the main road) They always have a video playing when you deliver there and well.......well you know the above quote.

Put yourself in the customer's position - what do you think would be UPS's position? A customer paying UPS and your salary to service their packages, and have to deal with a fistfight with a UPS employee?

Violence in the Workplace ring a bell with you? As I remember both UPS and the Union claim to have zero tolerance for this type of behavior

Zero tolerance?? I have seen employees both union and management back after a fight. (inside building) Now if a customer punches a driver through no fault of the driver (irate customer etc...etc...) does the driver have a right to defend himself????? And if he/she does, does he/she lose their job?????

If you are asking if I was offended No I was not. I've heard plenty worse from much more professional people then a UPS delivery driver. I had a girlfriend who is a teacher and some of the stuff she says....

Offended or not, I think the question was if you thought it was unprofessional.

Personally, I can't help but think less of a person if I hear them use a racial slur. I'm not necessarily personally offended when someone uses a racial slur in my presence either, but I think that it is offensive nonetheless. Not to mention the fact that it shows a real lack of class and professionalism.

I was told in driver orientation that you have every right to defend yourself in a fight if a customer or other person starts swinging at you. Now I dont think that means beat them to a pulp and keep on steeping on their throat when theyre on the ground bleeding, just enough force to stop the threat. ups could be sued if they wont let you defend yourself and someone beats you up pretty good. There is no law saying you cant defend yourself, every policeman will tell you that.

Cold World, the Brown Cafe Safety Committee needs some further info before we can close your case.....
Did you maintain three points of contact with this customer at all times?
Did you check your rearview for signs of additional traffic coming your way?
Did you bend at the knees?
Where you aware of slip/trip hazards?
Also, the center manager needs to know if you coded out this break time into your diad.
Thank you for your time

I agree with you. To answer your question, at the time I wasn't really thinking about professionalism I was more or less surprised but looking back it did seem unprofessional
