How Amazon's New Direct Delivery Network Could Really Work - Forbes

Amazon won’t be able to beat the efficiency of the other delivery companies when we look at the national scale, not for a very long time if ever. But in certain urban markets, New York, San Francisco and the like it’s entirely possible that Amazon could match the density, and thus efficiency, of the delivery networks. Which, of course, is why they’re doing their experiments in such areas. They’ve not got the economies of scale to go national with the plan but they might have them to cover certain markets.

I agree. Amazon will just try it in densely populated areas and use other carriers for everything else.
