As a manager, he DOES the authority. It is a reality. I used to see guys thinking that they actually had a degree of influence as to what they did and didn't do.
The expression: "We can do it the hard way or the easy way" comes to mind and in the end, whatever was requested/directed was accomplished. The union guy cursing and the manager smiling. I don't think it was because the manager was necessarily evil, it just seemed that the union guy called his bluff and tried to resist and look like a tough guy in front of everyone.
I couldn't handle the stupidity on both sides and moved on.
