What is the issue with for profit prisons if they save the government (read us taxpayers) money? The real issue is why are we imprisoning so many people.

Any proof they actually save (us taxpayers) money? Keep in mind private prisons do not pay the medical costs for prisoners, unlike state prisons.
The problem is, studies are finding private ran prisons keeping prisoners locked up longer (just for profit reasons) compared to state prisons. "Researcher Anita Mukherjee studied years worth of data from Mississippi, which has one of the highest incarceration rates in the country, and found that private prisons there doled out twice the amount of infractions against inmates, lengthening their sentences by an average of two or three months."

He was not referring to the initial sentencing. He was referring to the in prison activities that can extend those sentences.

The highlight was when a female who had walked out of class to attend this rally said " we want to make Massachusetts a safe city for illegals ".
