lunch breaks

at somewhere between 12 and 1 daily, there diads are shutdown by management, so they are forced to take there lunches. Now that is BS......

No, what happens is they are required to begin their lunch before the 5th hour of work. When lunch is entered the diad shuts down.

My area has a required 30 minute lunch. Our diad shuts down for 30 minutes. If we don't take lunch or start it after our 5th hour we get a warning letter. The diad reminds us several times to take our lunch as the 5th hour approaches.

I would hate a required hour lunch. 30 is perfect.

Ditto on the hour lunch. We have to take an hour lunch out here all at one time. We used to be able to take only 1/2 hour if we called in and said we would like to take a 1/2 hour to "make service." Got to say the buzz words. one hour lunch is a big fat bore. I am afraid it is siesta time afterwards.

Here in Florida, we have to take an hour. You can break it up if you like, though. I take the full hour at once. 1430-1530 is my time. It's a religion, I tell ya!

New England South has 2 10's and an hour lunch. The reason you take the hour is they deduct 1 hour for your lunch if you take it or not. Running your lunch everyday for the year costs you personally between 7-10k per year. For the first 7 years or so I took lunch but never ever put it in the diad. After the California thing happened we are now required to enter a lunch into the diad daily. We have 3 or 4 slots to break it up if we so choose to and they haven't made us take it between the 4th and 5th yet.

For me I take 20 mins at 12:00 after my air's are done. Then will usually hit lunch from 3-4pm or 5-6pm depending on the amount of work im dispatched with. A light day means i can fit it in before pickups. Heavy day I'd rather be done with my deliveries before it gets dark.

I work in the East New England district and we get two 10 min breaks and a hour for lunch.

i enter in the time i take for lunch. I dont enter in the entire hour for lunch and work half of it. I only enter in the time that i am not working.

If you are required to take 1 hour, but are taking less, then you aren't working as directed and can be fired.

Are you getting by with this method because it is allowed, or is it just that no one has noticed?

Consult with your union steward, then with your manager.

Good luck...

I've been driving for 21 years and the best thing to do is take your full lunch. Why would any driver want to give managment part of their lunch ? At my ctr the rookies skip their lunch to look good for management and customers. The drivers that skip lunch almost always have more work then the smart drivers that take their full lunch! When I first got the route im on now it had about 155 stops and 48 pick ups now I average about 110 stops and 40 pick ups ! Why? Well it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure it out . All it takes is ....TAKE YOUR FULL LUNCH !!!!!!!!!!!

this is what i dont understand.....no matter how long i take for lunch....it is the same in relation to my 9.5, so why if i take 10 or 20 minutes less for lunch should it matter when i enter what i take off for lunch properly.

TAKE YOUR LUNCH. The problem is, at least to my understanding, it's a numbers problem. If you finish your route and you don't put in a lunch, it is assumed that you did take one for ie pencil pushers accounting for sph and etc. At least that is my gist.

P.S. ex- ENE here, currently NNE. My center manager when I was in ENE told me I MUST take a lunch after they found I wasn't taking one ( but still inputting it into time card as though I did) and there was no ifs ands or buts.

Interestingly , as an aside, the NE supplement states that your management team can forgo your lunch hour and pay you for a 20 minute break.

The 1HR lunch was a hard fought victory for the Teamsters. You need that time to re-group so you can be focused to finish your day. Read a book, take a nap, get away from your truck. I have even brought a fishing pole to work. If it were up to UPS they would work you all day with no lunch. Take your lunch between the 4th & 5th hour. If you don't have time to make your P/Ups, then MGMT. needs to make the adjustment so they are done on time. After 1 week of covering your P/UPs because you are taking your lunch when you are supposed to, they will change. Drivers want UPS to follow the contract, then you should follow it also.....DON'T RUN YOUR LUNCH!

If the 1 hour lunch was a hard fought victory by the teamsters then I don't want them doing me anymore favors. I get 2 10 minute breaks and the "hard fought hour".

I don't want the hour! Its an hour stuck in the employ of UPS in which I'm not being paid. I don't understand why people don't realize this. Our day is long enough and you want to fight for an hour included that you are not paid for? why?

I'm sorry but UPS won your "hard fought lunch hour" and they are laughing all the way to the bank. The hour lunch allows them the convience of paying you straight time for pickups from 1630-1730 instead of overtime. Why would you want to delay the time your OT starts by 1 hour? Are we really this stupid?

UPS also benefits from the 1 hour lunch because of the free labor the obtain from drivers who run their lunch. There are many that could care less about the 5K/year they are giving the company because they value their free time at more that what they are losing.

I don't consider the hour lunch a victory by the teamsters if they even fought for it in the first place? Slavery ended during the Lincoln administartion. We are now in the Obama administration, yet UPS is still obtaining labor for free from many employees!!!! I think its the only company in America that can still get away with it legally.

I for this. I want the 20 minute break to eat something and thats its. I want to get back to work quickly as to not get tired.

I just want to finish the route and get home. When I'm at work, I want to work. I don't want the hour to do nothing. Its a waste of our very valuable time in my opinion.

Okay, it's a waste of time, but you still have to take the time. If you are required to take an hour long break, and it needs to be in the board, then you just have to. Like you said in your previous post, no sense in working an hour for free.

I think I'm going to put my hour to better use from here on out. There's a library on my route, plenty of shopping and I can always drive down to the river and fish, swim or take pictures. I may even take 1/2 an hour and improve my running ability.

It just seems weird that anyone would have a problem taking a hour break? I know you want to get home with family etc... but its break and it's required. You can do what ever you want; you can relax, exercise, read a book, watch TV, or call your family. What ever floats your boat. Isn't crazy that people wouldn't want a break. I understand if you have once in a while early event that night you need to go to, but every day. Did they have a hard time with recess in grade school, too?
