Management; they shoot their wounded and eat their young.

In my neck of the woods, UPS has taken on this weird cult-like feel in the last couple of years - management specifically.

Our safety message Friday via the diad was "We can trust each other, but not the public. Be aware of your surroundings today." That's just weird.
Ms. You're right, that is just weird. I wonder what the point is.

In my part of the country we can't even trust each other and especially can't trust mgt.

They have a sacred book like the i ching that has all the saftey propheses. The coins are tossed ,and the hexagram is revealed.
You'd best follow instructions, keep an eye on your mirrors

From the promised LAND
Under the current conditions many management people refuse to make any decisions at all without approval, everyone's hunkering down in their foxholes.

Just the opposite is what made UPS great. No one wants to make any waves, good or bad. All they want to do is be like the flashing light sign on the interstate telling everyone to change lanes. Expensive messengers.

Pman, I agree with a lot of what you write.

Problem is the management that does not subscribe to your way of thinking. The last center manager I had was one like that, and one of the reasons I had to leave early was his skills at management. Some people are not worth the ground they stand on, and he topped the list.

Ive been around awhile and I think this is one of ups's biggest problems.
Its personality conflicts. It's not all management,it happens everywhere all the time. One guy is well liked by some upper management person and dislikes another and "gets rid" of them any way they can.It could be a center manager hating a driver or a DM that gets told he's wrong by an on car sup.
I don't really believe theres any correlation to anyone not getting thier retirement benefits just to save money,or that theres a bounty paid.
I appreciate pretzel man's view, and respect that he has managed to keep his integrity through so many years. All in all good drivers are a dime a dozen, good sup's are very hard to find.

"good drivers are a dime a dozen."

I can't tell you how many times I have heard that in over 25 years truckin. ( 13 years before UPS ) from bosses. Most of those trucking companies are out of business.

supervisors keep forgetting who were the ones that build a successful company. It's the inmates , not the guards.

I have to disagree here. Good drivers are a dime a dozen - but good drivers who actually want to put up with a virtual living hell and 20 hours OT a week are not.

24 years ago Kelly and Rhodes ask if I would go into management, I turned them down said I can't treat people like some sups around here do. A couple years ago, I was asked to become a feeder sup. I seriously considered doing it, because it's getting dangerous driving out here and I thought sitting behind a desk instead of a feeder would be safer. I went to a supervisor with more than 30 years and talked to him. He is someone I trust, there are a few good ones at UPS. I have seen my fellow feeder drivers killed and injured out here on the road. Too many cars and trucks on the roads now, gone are the nights where you were the only truck on the road and looking for that fellow feeder on the flip side to talk to on the cb. Well, he told me don't do it. Stay where I am and stick it out. 6 more years til retirement.

Is there really any difference Sleeve? The good drivers are here and are putting up with a living hell. We stay. It certainly isn't because we love our mgt teams. :peaceful:

many good drivers in our building bid out to 22.3 because it is worth the pay cut. From what I see the good ones are not always on the road in our centers.

Does this mean I can open a Casino?

If you did you could run it with former mngmnt. Last I heard 11 were dealing cards at several midwest casinos with a DM dealing in Vegas. You'll know him when you see him he looks like Howard Sprague and he's always chewing on a toothpick.

Madame Zelda looked into her crystal ball and predicted that a large parcel delivery company would get its safety messages from the astrology columns of the supermarket tabloids. And lo, it has come to pass!!!

I have been working for UPS in the UK for 5 years as a pcd and have to say it is the worst company I have ever worked for.A company that has a disgraceful attitude to its staff especially in times of recession.

Reading about the operations in the US and the way staff are treated there comes as no surprise to me, neither am I surprised to see people sticking up for UPS the same kind of people who are "stupid" enough to work through lunchbreaks and give UPS hours and hours of their own time to get deliveries done and then come on forums like these and boast about it.
