It won't still be a story, heck nothing stays a "story " that long.
However behind the scenes at major shippers the world around this will be a hot item for months to come.
There's nearly a thousand news articles about it on google, that's quite a lot of bad publicity.

You are correct in someways, the smaller shippers probably will get a dose of reality. Larger shippers are well aware of both companies limits and believe me, we knew we were sending things out that had a high probability of missing delivery (High Probability is up to 25% miss). But we took orders right on through Christmas, there was no shutdown on our end. So if people waited to the end, then so be it.

It is literally impossible to know exactly what zips look good and which one's don't and have a system dynamically adjust to changes in any timely manner. Perhaps someday, but there is a lot of work on everybody's end to get there. We could all spend many millions each for a problem with a small window, that said I do expect some improvements YOY. We'll see how this shakes out.

After this season's fiasco, shippers will be prodding customers to shop early with incentives and early shopping discounts. We will see volume early in 2014 and contingency plans re-examined to see if it can really counter what had happened this year. But weather had been a factor and that's something no one can accurately predict (well the severity anyway).
