Wow this topic is like gun control. Both are right in their own way. It's easily a better system in the fact that when someone is on vacation, anyone can take their place. You don't have the belt supervisor pulling 1 or 2 trucks while the cover guy struggles reading the charts all week long. It is a job that requires a lot of focus to keep from misloading, however, what happens a lot over here is when someone comes to help out a slammed car, they usually end up doing the misloads. It's easy to get disoriented when you have to work a car ahead of your pull and you get slammed. The only thing you can do is keep your packages together and pull them as best you can. I whole heartedly disagree that PAS if faster than the old alpha most of the time. The only time PAS is faster is when a car gets moved or when the normal loader is on vacation. I used to be able to look at 1 label only and know exactly where to put it with out having to write the HIN on the side of the box. Writing and walking at the same time, as is required to keep up pace, is not a safe work practice. It took me almost 10 minutes longer to wrap up than before. Believe me, most of the older drivers would prefer to be back in the old school style. My misloads went up with the PAS as well. And I've worked here 12 years and hustle within reason. I truly believe that the process has been dumbed up to far to maintain focus for a lot of people. As a driver though, I don't mind having all of the information in my board (when they don't do add cuts.) I don't think the PAS system is the Godsend that UPS thinks it is, but it's a very effective system nonetheless. I would give it a "C" overall.
