"Must Speak Spanish" rant

I am really, really happy with my job at UPS. But, it is part time and times are tough. So, I have been looking for a second job for quite a while- with no luck.

I finally see a "Help Wanted" sign in my local library, where I spend lots of time, being a voracious reader. and would love to work there. I check it out and see the hours are perfect for me and won't interfere with my main job, the pay is decent, but...."Must Speak Spanish". 1 strike, I'm out.

I really worry for my kids-they don't have the choice to learn 2 languages until they are in High School, and by then it is harder to learn. Americans are at a total disadvantage. More and more jobs require Spanish. I am so sick of catering to "minorities". Already, my teenagers have trouble finding a job in our area, even at McDonald's. (ours is owned by a Spanish person, and only Mexican/Spanish work there)

I really wish I could raise some type of discrimination suit on this....but I guess that wouldn't work since English is not legally our national language.

I think the Polish, Italians, Arabs should all raise Hell so everything can be printed in MULTIPLE languages, and only someone who speaks all 4 can get a job. hahaha.

Ok, it is too nice out to be so pissed. I feel better now. Thanks. (Would be interested to hear of anyone else's experience in this area, or opinions.)

The language that was spoken in this country 300 years ago was different from the language that was spoken 200 years ago...which was different from what was spoken 100 years ago...which is different from what we speak today.

Language evolves and changes over time. Humanity evolves and changes over time. We can fear and resist that fact, or we can accept it and deal with it.

This sounds like a logistics concern.....not so sure you'll have this problem in the mid-west for example. I'm guessing you live in SoCal, the SouthWest or So Fla......

kids have a choice..... parents can take the initiative and purchase language teaching tools and most middle schools I believe have language electives, especially in the southern border areas of the country.

Food for thought...Just a little tidbit...some of the oldest established cities in America, like St Augustine and Pensicola Fl have been speaking spanish from the late 1400's to the 1800's, much longer than the newly established, english speaking, United States of America, gained independance. The same might be said for the SouthWest...Not to take away from the locals learning english, but having bi-linguals skills is always a plus on the resume, as employers look for the most versatile applicant available....

I deliver to a Mexican "bodega" store that caters to the local hispanic population. I had the lady that owns the place teach me a few simple "delivery phrases" in Spanish. I can ask for a money order, ask for a signature and clarify a last name in Spanish. It wasnt that hard to learn, took me a few days. Know what? It didnt kill me. My toungue didnt fall off. Im still an American. I have never understood why Americans have such a phobia about {GASP} learning a second language. Most of the rest of the world doesnt seem to think its a big deal.

It is ignorant to assume that being unable to speak English is the same as being unwilling to speak English.

Did the Europeans who [-]invaded[/-] moved to this country back in the 1600's try to learn the native language?

I am all for enforcing border laws; and the day that the teenagers and welfare queens of this country are willing to go out in the fields in +100 degree heat to pick lettuce for minimum wage, we will be able to put up a Berlin Wall on the Mexican border to keep those "invaders" out. Until then, we need to stop denying the reality that those so-called "invaders" are simply coming here to do the work that many of us are too damn lazy to do.

One other thing to bear in mind; if the situation were reversed, if you and your family were hungry and in poverty, and the only hope for a decent life was to sneak across the Canadian border...you too would be "invading" a foreign country.

I wish the country would adopt english as its official language.

with that said. You have to meet the requirements of the job. If you want the job that bad then get youself some Rosetta stone
CD's and learn to speak spanish.

I know I personally have been enriched by exposing myself to the spanish culture. The burrito at Chipoltes is absolutely awesome.
