As a small business owner, I've been "trying" to keep up with this and I can tell you it hasn't been easy. It doesn't help when I read the proposed legislation and realize how much of a burden this could be. I've pretty much given up staying on top of it now because it looks like I, along with many other small business owners, will, pretty much be screwed. What scares me the most about this legislation is the fact that it still does not cover all Americans. In fact, if you did the research and math, the current proposal(s) still exclude about 6 - 13 million Americans, which happens to be the about same amount of people who currently do not have insurance. The 40 to 50 million Americans that our elected officials and other claim to not have medical coverage is a corrupt number because many of these people choose not to participate in the programs made available to them or can afford to live without insurance. The truth of the matter is this "reform" is nothing more than a power and money grab. Many organizations (like AARP) stand to benefit even more from the proposed changes. Currently, AARP alone receives nearly $400 million dollars a year to license their name to supplemental Medicare insurance. Now imagine if they're allowed to expand their offerings. How much additional will they make and how much will it cost us? If the current proposals were truly about reform, our alleged leaders would first make every effort to eliminate the waste, fraud and abuse of the current system, which is estimated to cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars yearly. Heck, I think even the big "O" could be quoted as saying the number was closer to $200 billion a year. In addition, the medical community would also step up to hold doctors accountable and try to reduce the number of medial errors and/or malpractice claims, which is estimated to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans annually. This alone would drastically reduce the number of lawsuits that are allegedly driving up doctors’ insurance costs. Yes, there needs to be reform, but our government, who can't protect us from terrorism, identity theft, hackers into the pentagon or other vital resources like our electrical grid, is not capable of handling such an enormous undertaking. The system is corrupt and only a few will truly benefit with the current proposals. None of these leaders have the experience or the know how to make unbiased decisions that will benefit all Americans. Anyway, when I was hired a few years ago, HR stated that UPS pays ~$145 a week to provide "health care benefits" to part time employees. I'm sure those costs have gone up since then, so I would say that we have "Cadillac" benefits and yes we probably will be penalized for this. Checkers
