Yes. We have to badge in and badge out every day. If it doesn't work or we don't have one, we need to call a FT supervisor or higher to come sign us in.

They typically last 1-2 days in my center, we average 1 good person staying after peak each year out of about 25 people.

All of our hub shifts have a "preload" ...though 99.9 percent of the time it does not involve boxes going into vehicles, at least by PT on the midnight preload. They will sort slides/boxlines, do clerical work, or bag locals /surepost from spa, etc.

The hub I worked in had a turnstile. If you swiped your ID card and it didn't recognize it, the turnstile wouldn't let you in. It won't take too many trips out to the guardshack to sign you in for your supervisor to make sure you have an ID card.
That's how our part timers work. First half ,then a second shift comes in.
I think the hours are slightly different but pretty close.

I was told they have a midnight preload shift that I will be doing. Anyone familiar with it and what I'll be doing?

You can't until you get a UPS employee ID #...which I assume you get when you start working.
