What are the best pair of work gloves I should buy?

If you're unloading or sorting or preloading (loading the delivery trucks), you can get the string knit gloves with rubber dots really cheap here: http://www.librasafety.com/ (also good for drivers), it looks like the website is pretty bad, I order by phone (they do ship UPS). If you are loading the feeders (tractor-trailers), gloves will probably get in the way of using the scanners (they have really tiny buttons), unless you wear out or cut off the fingertips. In a short time you will probably get a good feel if you even need gloves (unless you have to move a lot of wooden crates-watch out for splinters/exposed nails!).

Yes, should be a photo ID.
And until you get ID, get to the guard shack early every day, to get signed/escorted in like for the interviews/tours.

Be careful, if unloading feeders, of grabbing packages nears the walls and floors. I can't tell you how many splinters I have gotten under my nails. Man, does that hurt!!

Good luck!

UPS isn't too bad. I do 700-800 pkg an hour as a loader. Everyday, I work hard everyday. To be honest, there are a lot of people who don't feel like working so they go slow. All I know is that they have me working very hard and I LOVE IT. I love challenge. I hope you do too. They don't want me unloading, sorting, etc.. 'cause I am one the best loader.
I always say to myself.. Is it worth? No, it is not, but it is a good work out for me. Yeah, I got hurt a few times... you get dirty.. blisters... not a pleasure at all. :)

If you have a 1 hour lunch break, load up on protein.

My orientation today went really well. My supervisor is actually a really cool chick. We talked more about movies and video games than actual work lol. We watched some UPS videos, had some multiple choice questions, and paper work, than we all just chilled and talked. I feel bad for y'all with crazy supervisors that yell and scream. She said that the hub I'm at consists of really cool supervisors that actually fetch water for us and like to joke around. I'll believe all that when I see it though. From the drivers I've spoken to that work out of my hub, the wait for driver is less than 3 years, and she confirmed that tonight. Alot of them are retiring soon. So yeah I'm pretty excited now to get working. Only thing that concerned me from what my supervisor said was they may freeze me out during peak. She said that a freeze out is a possibility due to the fact they don't like everyone making union all at once during the busiest time of the year.

I have two questions. I was just hired for package handler position, and was notified to come in for training this tues. Does the first day count as a paid work day even though it's just training and orientation? Also, are package handlers allowed to wear digital watches?

Yes, but you could also wear an analog watch. An analog watch is one in which the display is not digital, but is indicated (typically) by the continuous motion of two or three rotating pointers or hands pointing to numbers arrayed on a circular dial (the hour hand's movement being analogous to the path of the Sun across the sky). Just saying......

Lies, Lies, Lies. Striper you and I will be lucky if we ever see driver. Truth is it's closer to 5 or 6 years than 3. :whiteflag:

You don't need a watch. If you are working hard, time will fly by. That's why I hate being sent to small sort. I call it sissy sort, time drags there. If you want to find out what time it is, your scanner will give you the exact time.

yech, those knitted gloves are too thick, like wearing mittens for going outside to go sledding!

i preferred the thinner ones i mentioned a few posts back; i get 2 pairs & hand wash/ hang dry a set & rotate em

better tactile feel...

my lil bro is an unloader for brown & wants to stay that way for now... thinking of it like "getting paid to work out" is the key to this part of the industry.

My supervisor was showing us how to load yesterday. She had two mis-sorts, so the manager came and ripped into all of us instead of her. Luckily she spoke up lol. The scanner I still am unsure of. I know the first few days it's almost inevitable I'll screw up a few times, and get mis-sorts and build terrible walls if I am indeed a loader. How long does it usually take to get into a comfortable flow?
