In Massachusetts , we have a special way for those who wish to pay more ( income Taxes ) can do so. There is a higher rate available on everyone 's tax forms, all one has to do is check off a little box.
In this commonwealth with its majority of democrats, many who are VERY RICH, the % that do elect to check that box works out to less than one half of a percentage point, roughly 300-400 / yr.
Maybe someone should mention this to the messiah.
( It has never been reported that any Kennedy nor Kerry checked that box. )

While I will never agree with increasing taxes I do believe that there are far to many people who are were they are because of an accident of birth.

This may be because you were born to a wealthy family of privilege.

Or because you just happen to have the correct skin color to benefit from affirmative action programs.

This should spark some interesting and heated discussion.

If it were in ups discussions, oh yeah!, but here in the room known as current events, which is located in the dimly lit back of the browncafe warehouse, jim's comment just might escape scrutiny.

I wasn't going to throw someone like George W. under the bus without tossing one out for the Obama haters too :happy2:.

And none of you called me out for using were for where. I am disappointed.

Wonder what Obama would have to say as to how these top earners made their money?

The real price of Goldman’s giganto-profits

Although from Dec. 2006' would Obama consider this Goldman bunch lucky?

Goldman's top alumni wield White House clout

And does lucky apply to the former Goldman employees who now work inside Obama's own adminstration?

Record Bonuses at Bailed-out US Banks

There's an ole saying about something "smelling rotten in Denmark." I say the smeller was a bit turned around and confused by the direction of the wind and the stench is coming from Washington DC with help from New York!

If this were in the ups discussion forums, it would have ignited a fire but being that the current events forum is located in a dark room towards the back of a blocked rarely traveled aisle of the browncafe , most of the members who would jump on this are probably unaware that such a thought was posted.

Well sure, because if you take a look around, we have far too many minorities in positions of power, wealth, and privilege. Those darn affirmative action programs....

Is that a lack of achievement issue or a denial of opportunity issue.

When I see someone such as yourself that is pro affirmative action I wonder if you would support it to the degree of giving someone your job that you feel was denied an opportunity?

if affirmative action is a good thing then maybe its time white people start demanding more players in the NFL and NBA. But that is a whole other thread.

I'm not pro affirmative action, I oppose it on principle.

What a crock! Someone needs to tell Obama that top earners are "just hard workers."

this is a classic tactic in the liberal/socialist handbook.

Work a little class warfare to implement your strategies.

"who's going to mind if we take a little more from the rich to give health care to the poor"

Then create the monsterous health care beaurocracy. At which point we all end up paying for it through our taxes.

Once we decide its ok to screw the rich then who do we go after next?

The other issue I have with this whole issue is I have a feeling it will lead to a degradation of our own health care plans.

It would be natural to think that a take from the rich mindset would also look to take from those who are rich in benifiting from a strong benifit plan.

What protection would we have from a UPS dumping our present plan since we now have a government sponsored health plan to fall back on.

Some questions to ask and things to think about.

Then why did you call me out? My statement was anti-affirmative action, not anti-minority.

If you were trying to point out that being born a minority in America is far from a plus, historically I would agree with that.

But, if "liberals" would have their way, being born a minority would automatically qualify you for preferred treatment in order to give you a "step up". Is that the fair way to rectify past injustice, to create more injustice? No.

I just thought this whole thread was ironic in that the title of the thread is that Obama feels top earners benefit from luck. But many feel Obama benefited from luck to get where he is.

But then it was suggested that most of the top earners in our country became that way through hard work. I feel that probably most of them are in the positions they are in because of an accident of birth.

If you rise to the top based on you own ability I applaud you, no matter what color you are. But if you used your color to advance, or if you were born to great wealth and used that as your spring board for greater riches, I am less then impressed.

It's a statistical fact that the majority of "top earners" are first generation. Meaning.....they started out like most people, which was with little to nothing, and worked their way up. I listen to Dave Ramsey on the radio alot and he has stated that the number of millionaires that are first generation are somewhere around 80%. So, only 20% became millionaires "by accident." If you really want to call it an accident. Either way they shouldn't be punished with higher taxes.
