OMS Who are you and what do you do?

OMS - Operations Management Specialist. Yes, they are sups. Even though they're part time. Go against them and they can make your day harder than it has to be. Our OMS's are pretty cool. A few of them are :censored2:...but that's the case with all managers.

The guys that sit in the office and play telephone and send messages. What is their official title and responsibilities?

I asked them one day, they said there specialists, we have 2 at night, on the money, always doing the right thing, always have or backs, I can't say anything bad about them.

No.... I am right.

No.....they not supervisors.... As defined by the NLRA.

If an OMS could issue a warning letter.... they would be in the management classification.

They can answer phones.... really well.... in some cases. And take messages too.

They aren't supervisors.
This is evident on the occasions that they get irritated enough to walk down to the center managers office to intervene in a "situation".
If they were indeed supervisors, they wouldn't need backup.

That being said, a good relationship with a "good" OMS person is invaluable.
I never set out to be at odds with an OMS person.

I like and respect the OMS. Not only do they have to deal with non cooperative drivers, but they have to sit in an office with the mgmnt team.

Son, I was working at UPS before you were born.

An OMS cannot issue a warning letter. A part-time supervisor can't issue a warning letter.

A part-time supervisor can ask a full-time supervisor, to put a request in to the Labor Dept.

That is why it doesn't have your signature on it. You might of handed it to the employee.... but that's it.

I am not trying to diminish the role of an OMS.... just clarifying where they reside, on the totem pole.

so, if i'm not really a supervisor, and thus not part of management, the Teamsters should refund all that grievance money from me working, right?

I have a nice OMS lady, she orders me uniforms (if they're available).

I have another nice OMS lady, who speaks English well in person, but her messages are confusing.

I have another OMS lady who is a new-hire, just trying to do her job...she probably has four people telling her four different things...I'm real nice to her, she just started, and honestly she's doing the office-version of my cover-driver job.

I can guarantee anyone listening that these 3 ladies cannot issue me a warning letter on their own volition.

If I blatantly disregard their instructions (at 1900, when the plan REALLY falls apart), then I will be subject to spankings.

TIR, tell me how these nice OMS ladies could penalize me.

the temps hired into the OMS position during peak are not supervisors, they are temps

a normal OMS however is a supervisor, regardless of what any contract-thumper says

however, the actual authority of a PT supe extends as far as whatever their center-manager wants it to extend. for some this is equivalent to being a grievable hourly, for some this means having as much authority as many full-time managers

i have the authority to issue warning letters, because i DO, and my center-manager backs them fully

if you believe that seeking permission = having no authority, then no one on earth has any 'authority' whatsoever and this entire conversation is pointless

I know that the warning letters issued at my center are signed directly by the stamp the DM gave his secretary.

Well with this line of thought the FT sups on my shift aren't issuing the letters either as they're signed by my sort manager above them.

I'm not poking at anyone here, but it seems there's a disconnect on who is authorizing the letters and who is presenting them. I'm starting to believe people aren't thinking that there's a difference. In my opinion any level of management can present a letter, but they have to go up some steps to get it authorized.

I always laugh....When part-time supervisors "wear" that as a badge of honor.

What it indicates, is the inability to direct and manage the workforce.... So they fall back to doing the physical task, themselves.

It makes my job easier.... to get those grievances paid. Thanks.

I have the authority to issue warning letters, and my center-manager backs them fully.

Umm.... No part-time supervisor can "issue" anything.

Just as Walmart needs greeters at the front door....

McDonalds needs burger technicians....

UPS needs individuals.... such as yourself.
