Orion Compliance

In the beginning (late 90's anyway) there was Remote Deferral.

In an effort to save miles, we started intentionally witholding service on certain packages. There was a quota. Reports were printed out, numbers were chased, discipline threatened. Eventually...it passed.

Then came PAS/EDD. Again, it was about saving miles. 85 % compliance was demanded. Reports were printed, numbers were chased, discipline threatened. Eventually...it passed.

Along came Telematics. Idle time and backs were being counted. Once again the quotas were created; reports were printed, numbers were chased, discipline was threatened. Eventually however...it passed.

Now we have ORION, and guess what? Compliance is once again being demanded. Reports are once again being printed, numbers are once again being chased abd discipline is once again being threatened.

As it has before...this too shall pass.

I remember that! It was called Remote Res at our center. They gave us little neon stickers to put on the boxes to service cross them so we could peel them off when we delivered them so the customer wouldn't know we had it banging around the back of the truck for the past 2 days...lol

Orion is like Socialism, its great in theory but when put into practice it will fall apart. If you dont have orion and want to know what its like... take every thing you have ever been told about safety throw it out the window and you have the start of orion. Probably 40 extra left hand turns, crossing streets, and other general acts of maroon can be yours for the low low price of orion!

I had my first discussion with an Orion "implementer" today this morning.

He couldn't understand why I made Orion 99% yet still somehow managed to be 28 miles "over" the "Orion solution."

I might as well have been talking a child for that 30 minutes.

Picture is relevant to this morning.

Lately I've been beating orion on every route I've been covering by just turning off Orion and trying to just keep the mileage down. Today I beat it by 10 1/2 miles. What a waste of money Orion was.

Are you not amused?
I have been told I am not as smart as Orion. I guess this is true since I never used to drive by the same stop 4 times in a single day before I get it delivered, I can do that with orion.

Also I never used to make so many left turns but thanks to orion I know every thing UPS told me about not taking lefts was wrong.

I hear you! My supervisor asks why I went 15 miles over....I said what was my trace? He said 90%. How can I be 15 miles over if I was 90 %. He said I dont know did you ask the Orion guy? I said no you care you go ask him. What a circus. Got one supervisor who doesnt know what the other is doing and they are all yelling at you for 4 different things. LOL I just get it started and walk away, "once I am released"

What I don't understand is why was I told not to use Orion during peak? And why do we even have the option to switch between EDD and Orion.

Because they have to pretend that it works, at least for 10 or 11 months out of the year.

During peak, the operational necessity of actually getting the packages delivered outweighs the need to pretend that it works, so we are told to turn it off.

Stupid? Yes...but thats the kind of thing that happens when you work for stupid people.

Ok, so no Orion here yet, but have heard it's slated for 2015. The most glaring and obvious issue I can see for my center is that our air is late more than it is on time. We are often told to leave and come back after the plane arrives. This is an effort to make our preload appear to be more efficient by creating a cleaner leave building time. So they will have to change their song on the whole saving miles thing, that ain't gonna happen here.
I've noticed though, they seem recently to have almost forgotten that telematics exists. This after being on a telematics jihad for the last few months. Maybe they are just trying to retool in the meantime.

They have all the drivers drive back to the center for late air? That's ludicrous! Talk about a massive amount of wasted resources. The proper method is to run out the air to meeting points on the driver's routes.

That depends on your building. We have local routes come back and the extended routes have the air shuttled.

They've attempted many different solutions. Sometimes we just wait, sometimes it's shuttled. Recently the dance we do is the "double trip shuffle." It's not about service, or miles, or safety, or time savings. It's about creating the illusion that the preload is a success. Orion will only cause the unveiling of this obvious lite as well.

Our center has both city and rural routes. Generally when we have late air (30 minutes or more) they will shuttle it out if they have enough drivers to do so; if not, the city guys will come back for their air and the others will have meet points set up. It makes sense to send us out rather than have us stand around. Yes, we end up going back to some of the same stops, but by then most of the bulk has been delivered.
