Should union membership be optional?

Why anyone would want to be a member of a union baffles me. Im in a non union shop. Guess what. 401k, Medical, dental, vision, and childcare. Unions are a dying breed. Statistics will tell you this much and anyone suggesting otherwise is either lying or ignorant.
Nice, first post and you revive a three year old thread. I'm starting to agree with whoever said we need a grace period for newbies.

If you are enjoying union scale wages and benefits and are not paying dues, in my opinion, your a freeloading scum bag. I have zero sympathy for you, your family, or your career. I'd hope you get screwed by management and find out that because your local has no money you get horse sheet for representation. Horse sheet is what you deserve.

thats an awful lot of hatred you have there bmwmc

Accepting compensation offered by the employer equivalent to what we in the union receive does not make one a 'scumbag.'

But when things go wrong, don't come crying when there is no support.

The irony in your statement is that the red state food stamp recipients make up the bulk of those that voted for Obama in those states.

What is your source for that information? Just wondering where you found that 'fact'. Because that statement defies common sense.

The employees in a Canadian Walmart tried to organize---Walmart shut the store down.

So we should give up here in America?
What you will never realize is this; everything that you think you earn, was earned in part many times over, by previous members of the Teamsters union.
These brave, exploited workers at Walmart may very well be paving the way for future Walmart store employees.
I would be proud to join them on a picket line.

If a huge company like walmart refuses to hire full time workers with good wages and pay how is this economy goin to improve? Obama cant force the waltons to provide real jobs to citizens. Greed greed greed. I dont blame obama for wanting to get rid of tax cuts for the rich!

Walmart jobs were never meant to support an entire family.

UPS would love for that ideology to be accepted at our company as well.
They would love to classify us all as part time workers, working us 36 hours a week.
Are you suggesting this is an acceptable business model for the American worker?

"Walmart jobs were never meant to support an entire family"
Never meant by who?

Walmart jobs were never meant to support an entire family.

Most UPS jobs do not pay enough to support an entire family.
One person - yes.
Family of 4 - marginal
Unless one lives in a "bubble of happiness". :wink2:

Of course, the real problem is people thinking they are entitled or deserve to live a life-style above their income.
I know people who get by on less than $20,000 / year.
They drive older (older being 15 or years) cars,
they have a flip phone using Tracfone and/or do MajicJack VOIP,
they get broadcast TV (no cable or satellite) or absolute basic package on cable/sat,
no iPhones or iPads,
a few use internet access from their neighbors wi-fi or go to McD's or the Library,
They rarely eat-out,
they use coupons at the grocery store,
they don't have health insurance (Obamacare will hopefully help),
they don't take vacation except to visit other relatives,
