What the guy being interviewed conveniently didn't mention is the huge cost to Rx companies invested in the development of new drugs. Without some protection from competition for a given period of time the researchers would dry up and blow away. I'm not for monopolies as such, but without those protections there are many life saving drugs that would not be available today. There should be a study to see how long it generally takes for an Rx company to start making a profit from a given drug, maybe 15-20 years is too long. As it is, if a human condition that requires a drug to cure or even just help with symptoms one determining factor is the number of inflicted people as in how many will be using the new drug. Without the protections, rare diseases would never get what they needed to maintain any kind of relief and or life.
