Supervisors Working Grievances on Behalf of Others

Another important Steward function is being well-versed in the different Contracts & Supplements, as well as Memorandums of Understanding and some unconventional contracts such as Feeder work rules.

A lot of time can be spent correcting misinformation from well-meaning but misguided "experts" that might never have read the Contract(s) cover to cover. They might even quote language that while they believe it is in the Contract they cannot find it when pressed.

One common mistake is to not realize that Article 40 trumps all other agreements unless specifically stated (see Article 40, preamble). Another is failing to understand how language relates to the situation, both in the literal sense and it's intent. A good example is Article 40 (1)(j)(2) where a careful reading should have the understanding that a package driver being forced to work a Holiday such as the Day after Thanksgiving would be paid a the supplemental rate (overtime) but someone volunteering to work this day is paid straight time.

This is a great point. And I agree.
#1 Article 40 is for air drivers only (you said drivers).
#2 Article 40 only supersedes language on the "same subject" (air drivers).
#3 There is a strategic reason for the use of vague language in a labor contract (known as gray area).

Except when it specifically relates to package drivers as in 40(1)(j)(2). 40(1)(j)(4) has the air driver pay as straight time with OT over 8 for Holiday work.
The last 5 sentences of (1)(j)(2) lay out the procedure for using full time package drivers for Holiday work.

What part of the country do you work? What does your supplement say?

Southwest. The Western supplement is silent. Our package rider says "Article 36: Air Operation - , See National Master United Parcel Service Agreement Article 40 Air Operation" which is consistent with the Preamble for Article 40 in which it states that article supersedes all Supplements, Riders and Addenda unless specifically otherwise stated in Article 40.
