It is amazing how "conservative" our government has become. We are a nation born of a revolution and now our government seems to side against revolutionaries whether in this country or abroad. But are the American people conservative? I don't think so. If this is such a conservative country, name me one conservative or right wing idea that has moved American society forward! Conservatives at the time of the Revolution sided with the Brits. Conservatives at the time sided with the slave owners in the Civil War. During the 18th century, it was progressives who fought to stop child labor and create unions while cons begged for the status quo. Who stood up for women's right to vote in 1920, progressives. During the great Depression, FDR and the New Deal saved our economy , gave us Social Security, unemployement insurance, the NLRB, relief for the poor, empowered unions, created jobs for the jobless as conservatives cried socialism. In the 1960s, when LBJ was creating Medicare for the elderly, the cons were once again crying socialism. When black people were marching for civil rights and women and gays for equal rights , cons said "not yet". When in the 1970s liberals pushed environmental laws and OSHA, cons stood for the polluters and Big Business. When supply side economics was all the rage in the 1980s , cons were pushing "free trade" as our savior, but we all know how that has hurt manufacturing in this country. A matter of fact I wouldn't even call them conservative at all. Today , it is the liberals or progressives who are trying to conserve what they have done (social security, unions, medicare, environmental laws, etc) over the years. The repubs are not conservative but more reactionary in nature. The only thing they want to conserve is the rich staying rich and the rest of us fighting it out!
