Sooooo - This current economy is in a very fragile state of teetering balance (which it was not in '97). I am very surprised at your perception that using the "s" word somehow makes you think it will enhance your position. I am just curious, what kind of concessions do you expect from UPS? With all the people who are out of work, there are substantial amount who would figuratively "cut your throat" for your job. Are you not making enough money? Do you not have enough benefits? Do you not have job security? What are you lacking that you feel it necessary to use the "s" word? Another thought from the union side..... How long do you think the union will be able to pay strike benefits before going broke? Do you really think that you will get other unions to help fund your strike benefits? What was the unemployment rate in '97? What do you think will happen now if you try to strike? How much support do you think the rest of the country will give you knowing what you earn and the benefits you receive? I can tell you right now that you would position other companies especially FDX to permanently take a controlling position in the transportation index. I feel you would be signing your own death warrant along with every retiree who collects a pension. It isn't the Teamsters who fund those pensions. It is UPS. The US economy and the "American Dream" is never going to be what it used to be, so be careful what you expect to get from a union company when your biggest competitor is non-union and is poised for the take-over. You are extremely naive if you think that FDX will be unable to suck up enough volume to make UPS a minor player in the future.
