The Montana Town That Wants to Be Gitmo

Another issue that supplied Obama with some wonderful good sounding liberal loving rhetoric that has been impossible to follow through on.

As badly as Obama wants to be the human rights guy he now stands there holding the Gitmo hot potato wondering how he is going to get out of the possible nightmare of having been the guy the let loose some of the most hardcore terrorist in the world.

Should we be as worried when Bush released 500 GITMO detainees as you are about Obama relocating 240 of them?

Of the 500 detainees that Bush RELEASED, 61 returned to terrorism.

Yet when Obama wants to RELOCATE 240 detainees to supermax facilities in the U.S., many people seem to think Obama is showing weakness on terrorism.

Can someone explain to me why it was OK for Bush to RELEASE 500 detainees but it's not OK for Obama to RELOCATE 240 of them.

Sammie,...good article, but;
"Obama has vowed to close the prison by January 2010, and the Senate's vote was not the final word on the matter. It will be next month at the earliest before Congress completes work on the legislation, giving the White House time pursue a compromise that would allow the president to fulfill his pledge".
by all means, not the end of this issue at all....

Au contraire, Monsieur Diesel.

I'll betcha a plugged nickle that Gitmo stays open for a long, long time.
Closing shop in Cuba is unnecessary for one; all that needs to happen
is perhaps some policy changes. Obama, etc. needs to focus on something besides "justice for terrorists" and appeasing his radical followers. It's the perfect place to keep guys who don't belong on the mainland and should rot in hell anyway. Gitmo is nearly impossible to attack from the ground or from the air and hopefully your Fearless Leader will come to his senses on this one.

Strength through joy
Bush released 500 back to their own countries.
Making them their own countrymen problem, maybe they were released,or before hand sent to a re-education program
So some may have return to terrorism, but the majority have not.
O wants to relocate 240 into our country.
If & when they are finally let go , they will be in our backyards.
Some can not be returned to their own country because they have a death sentence waiting for them, those few are really in a legal mess. Until some other nation says ok they are stuck in Gitmo. Or would you suggest we grant them a free pass to live here ? Just like the Hamas fighters that O is letting into the country, with free room & board no less ( $20 million to be spent on them, by executive order ) .

I never said a thing about being worried about Obama relocating them.

In fact I think its a marvelous example of his campaign dishonesty. Gitmo was his campaign promise to lure in the human rights fanatics. First thing he does when sworn in is say he is closing it within a year. Now that he has put himself out there he does not know what to do with the folks in Gitmo which are some of the most violent in the world.

Obama is now looking at the same factors that Bush did when he made the decision to open Gitmo and does not like the options and does not know how to get out of the hole he has dug.

Its clear he did not think this through. So as it stands now its another broken campaign promise. However the ramifications of his actions could be that he would be known as the president who let loose the terrorists who then did something catostrophic somewhere. He does not want that honor but does not know how to undue the damage already done.
