When I was a new driver (30 years ago) my best friend killed himself. I called in and said I needed the day off. I was told that if I didn't come in I'd be terminated.
I came in and barely made it through the day. I was so upset I drove past stops and made numerous mistakes.
The next day I was pulled into the office and yelled at for running late. I explained how upset I was.
The center manager told me if I was so upset i shouldn't have come in. I reminded him that he threatened termination. He shook his head and said, "You know we couldn't fire you for that"
That was the last time I asked for a day off. Since then I call and just say I won't be in.

I had a water pipe break in my basement one morning. Had 2 inches of water flooding everything. I shut off the main valve and called in and told my center manager the problem I was having. He said "you've got the water shut off- we can't spare you today- come on in"--- I hung up on him. The next day he appoligzed to me and acted like I should be his best buddy. Just another center manager I was glad to see move on.

Supervisors take a course at management school on medicine.... It's called "You ain't that sick 101." If you call in and they convince you to come in, you are doomed. They'll think they can bully you every time. If I call in they know I'm not coming in and there isn't much they can say. Of course, I don't have an absentee problem.

Cement,,don't ever jinx yourself on that one, I';m not flaming you,jmo but there are so many parents out there with sick children that would take offense to that.. Thank God everyday that little girl gets out of that bed healthy and happy..

True story, but I gave Boss ample time in the form of a request personal day written notice a week before then a reminder the day before and Boss was still reluctant to give his seal of approval. Had to go to a court ordered mediation...but I don't have to explain or invite Boss into my personal life...A personal day is exactly that...a personal day.

With all due respect, I won't lie when i call in sick. I just tell them that i'm sick, or wife's sick, or too tired or whatever is the truth. Why lower yourself by lying? It lowers your self esteem and destroys your integrity.
90% of the drivers lie when they call in sick and managers know it. Then they don't believe anyone when they are telling the truth.
honesty is the best policy is more true today than ever.
