It was my understanding that Detroit lockers were only to be used at low speeds to get out of certain obstacles and low traction situations then released. Sort of like the interaxle differential lock on a tandem axle tractor.

Not sure what you mean by this, but a Detroit Locker is an automatic locker and can not be turned off or on at the the users desecration. A Detroit Locker is one of the worst things you can have in the snow or ice. A selectable locker is what you need.

Detroit Lockers would absolutely suck on tight and winding roads, if the turn is too tight it will engage in the middle of the corner and throw your ass end all over the place, especially on ice.
