    The leadership shift may signal that UPS will seek another major purchase or a share buyback bigger than the $2 billion approved this year. Davis has indicated a willingness to take such a step, which could involve taking on more debt and putting UPS's triple-AAA credit rating at risk.

    "It's an event we could see happen sometime in 2008,'' Jason Seidl, an analyst with Credit Suisse Holdings in New York, said today in an interview. "Scott has frequently said he's not married to a triple-A rating.''
