UPS driver saves man after jump into Rock River - RRStar A UPS driver risked his life Tuesday to rescue a man who had jumped into the Rock River from the East State Street bridge. Jeff Hermansen, 40, of Rockford was driving a UPS truck across the bridge around 12:45 p.m. when he noticed the man in the river. Hermansen pulled his truck over on the bridge, hustled to the west bank of the river near the PNC Bank branch, removed his shoes and waded in. The UPS worker swam about 15 yards into the river and pulled the man to the shore. The man who jumped was taken to the hospital for a physical and mental evaluation and is expected to be OK.
