Here we are, Union members, contributing our hard earned dollars out of a general sense of, if nothing else, the spirit of giving…being able to say, hey, I did something, I gave.</span></span></p><p></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Book Antiqua'"><span style="font-size: 12px">The problem I have is this. In the end, generosity aside, there is a certain…PR bonus that is gained in the favor of UPS, and you may say, okay, so, that’s a good thing, and I am not saying its not…but look at it deeper. What is happening is that the Company is the one that is illuminated as the benefactor of said generosity. This is a generosity that is made possible by countless union members donations, millions of dollars over the years. We are paying for their PR.</span></span></p><p></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Book Antiqua'"><span style="font-size: 12px">My point is this, if we were ever to have a strike in the future, or any concerns related to contractual issues (between the company & the union), that there is a certain amount of public opinion that has an affect on the outcome. Two scenarios have very real affects on such outcomes: Either the public sympathizes with us (union), or they sympathize with the Company.</span></span></p><p></p><p><span style="font-size: 12px"><span style="font-family: 'Book Antiqua'">Certainly a public made aware of the “companies” generous contributions might be made biased to sympathize with them…saying to themselves, look at how generous this company is to such charitable causes. And it’s exactly for this reason that the donations are made under the banner of UPS, its public relations. </span></span></p><p></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Book Antiqua'"><span style="font-size: 12px">I just think that they should also put the Teamster logo on that check.</span></span></p><p></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Book Antiqua'"><span style="font-size: 12px">Then we would have these charities rallying behind us when things go wrong, rather than backing the company.</span></span></p><p></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Book Antiqua'"><span style="font-size: 12px">And of course the companies standpoint would be, well, wait a minute, its not about who donates the money, its about the donation that counts…and my answer is, okay, than take UPS’s name of the donation header, and put Teamsters logo on there (cause most of its coming from us anyway, one way or another).</span></span></p><p></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Book Antiqua'"><span style="font-size: 12px">Which brings up another interesting point, why aren’t we, as union members, as a local, as an International, getting out into the public and giving back to this degree on our own. We could benefit in the long run from such things. Volunteerism, and charitable donations, are key in shedding Organized labor in a light that is beneficial to our future.</span></span></p><p></p><p><span style="font-family: 'Book Antiqua'"><span style="font-size: 12px">Not to mention, it just makes you feel good.
