What happened to Harry & David?

Out For Delivery
Five years ago I was drowning in Harry & David fruit boxes. This year I haven't seen even one.
Was it the front door DR's in sub-freezing weather? Was it our 4.5 percent rate increase each year that
made shipping costs more expensive than contents of the box? I suppose low-end shippers are
probably gone for good and I'm left with 90 lb. Pottery Barn boxes.

i remember that! it was a super deal online, and everyone got in on it, no harry and david deals since that were of that caliber. probably wont be anymore since they likely learned their lesson

I have had almost no fruit boxes of any kind. That makes me very happy. I really hated leaving 40 lbs of frozen oranges on someone's porch to freeze even harder.

Every year it's a new fad. H&D had a good run though. A couple years ago Wolferman's was a big deal. I haven't see one yet this year (though their english muffins are awesome). Haven't really noticed a big trend this year. Except Amazon, but that will be short lived as well.

Perhaps it's all being shipped Surepost now and we don't see it, del my first Fiji's cheese pkg yesterday. Hadn't seen one of those in awhile, we used to call those squirrel food. Those always seem to go to grandma's house and she doesn't know they're coming so by the time she finds it the squirrels already have.

H&D went the way of Swiss Colony, Hickory Farms, and all the rest. Too expensive to ship food anymore. You can buy it locally. There's still a few boxes of it in the car. As usuall we'll see more during crunch week. I remember the old 4 cube selection tray full of cheese pkgs. That's when you could get 200 stops in a 4 and thought you were working as hard as a person could. But someone always had to ruin the day and get something in one of those P.O.S. O/S Fingerhut boxes.

I think they moved to San Francisco.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Harry & David is based out here in Oregon. We used to receive multiple trailers every day during peak from Harry & David. Then a few years back, FedEx underbid us for the account, and that was the end of that.

FedEx got them. Old news, but sort of low-key.

Working at the cu counter at the time, their perishable fruits and jams "discard" items were pleasant when shipped to customers with undeliverable address errors. ;p

Someone at the station the other day said we were getting alot more Amazon because UPS was overly swamped. I personally take this with a grain of salt, but is there any truth to it?

They filed Bankruptcy in 2011.. I think they had some outstanding debt with UPS.. I'm not sure if UPS dropped their account because of this or not.. Harry and David is still around.. I rarely see their boxes anymore

As more and more states pass legislation that require Amazon to collect state sales taxes I see their market shrinking. As for the internet disappearing---not as long as there is porn. I do see Facebook being replaced by something----don't know what but someone is always trying to build a better mousetrap.

Is anyone still stupid enough to send fruit up north in the winter? When I used to deliver the frozen oranges if I met the customer I would say--Oh look --someone sent you a set of croquet balls. I don't know if it is true I was told that the oranges thawed out ok but apples turned to applesauce.

Harry & David have "holiday stores" open through Jan. 15.
We had one south of us in an outlet mall (San Marcos?) It's still listed on their site. You buy your goodies right there, so no shipping......unless you are shipping it to others.

I get a craving for their choc. covered cherries and We'll run down there and buy some.
