Today was my first day as a helper. The center called me at 10 and asked if I could meet the driver at 1030. So I packed a lunch and off I went. My driver wasn't overly friendly or talkative but neither am I so we got along alright. He was filling in for someone else's route and he didn't really know the area so maybe that had something to do with it. But he ended up keeping me 9 hours so I guess I did ok. The vibe that I got was work hard and keep the BS to a minimum. We had about 200 stops I believe. I have no idea if that's a lot or not. I would get out and wait for him to toss me the package then run to the door. I'm tired but it wasn't overly exhausting, a little sore in some places. He said one of the other drivers had a helper earlier in the week and left him a stop and just drove away because the helper was that bad. I don't know if that's true or if he was just making sure I was motivated. But I will say there were a few people at my orientation that looked like they would last about an hour tops. Hopefully the dispatcher calls me back on Monday, I enjoyed the work.
