Sitting at Southwicks Beach waiting to be obliterated. I was positive the next thing to blow up was the nuke plant in Oswego.

Being on the left coast, I was still in bed and the phone rang. My friend back east told me to turn on the TV quick. For the next few days, all I did was watch TV for the latest.

I had Imus on the radio. Warner Wolfe called in from his home. He was talking about the first plane hitting when, right in front of him, the second plane hit. It was riveting and extremely chilling.

I watched the first building go down at one of my stops. I was not very productive that day. I wanted to bring my load in and go home and hug my family

I was pulling a '53 with 936 - 5012 to GEMS (General Electric Medical Systems). The windows were wide open, it was hot outside, the AM radio was on full blast with poor reception. Charlie Sykes broke in with braking news,..."an aircraft hit the World Trade Center in New York"...as I pulled out of the Hales Corners curve on 894 traveling north. The radio conversation changed and the speculation was on a small private aircraft accident - geez...I remember thinking...you don't "accidentally hit a huge building". Then the second tower was hit....

I was in my grocery store, and as usual opened up at 7am.
While I was waiting for the big rush to come in (kids going to school or a few adults heading to work), I turned on the TV, we had under our counter.
At first, I really didn't believe the news story being showed, ( thought maybe it's a discovery channel show, and what if this ever happened) !
But, as the news went on and on, and seeing the 2nd plane hit the second tower live on TV, I think reality sunk in, and I even changed channels (yes all channels had this live tragedy on that morning) - Then I knew it was for real !

Our city newspapers had special evening editions for the next few days to follow, too.
And actually, that was the last time we had those special editions - 10 years ago !

I was out delivering next day air in a rural area listening to the local radio station when the DJ chimed in that a plane "accidentally" crashed into the firs tower. A bit later I had got to the horse track (now a casino/horse track) and the guys in the control room had 12 tis all on different news channels. I spent the next 30 minutes stealing time....I mean watching the news as the 2nd plane hit. I literally had to tear myself away so I could make the rest of my deliveries.

I was on my way to my first stop, listening to Howard Stearn, when the first plane hit. For the next 10 minutes he was saying "we are under attack" which I thought was wrong, figuring it was accident. Then stuttering John freaks out with "oh my god, a second plane just hit the other tower". Sure enough Howard was right. 15 minutes later I receive a message on the Diad - Alot going on today, be careful. Saw the first tower come down live on a tv at one of my business stops. I will never forget that day

Pees in the brown Koolaid
I had just gotten out of the shower and dressed to go in to work, and I was in the middle of wrapping my 10 yr old son's birthday present ( his birthday is 9-11-91) when my wife called me on her cell phone and told me to turn on the TV. I got thru the workday and we still managed to put a birthday party together for him but it was pretty tough to smile and focus on gifts and cake that day.

I was shifting in the yard and also was listening to the Chicago broadcast of Howard Stern. He is known for playing bits from other radio and tv people who make mistakes on air. As the commercial break ended Bryant Gumbel`s voice came on and was talking about planes hitting the WTC and I listened and it went on and I`m waiting for the punchline still thinking it was a radio bit. When I got to the BNSF shack as I took a trailer next door they had a tv on and it showed the buildings in flames.
CACH sits near the two major Chicago airports and normally the sky is full of planes. Day and night you can see them lined up coming in. The departing planes from Midway come right overhead every few minutes around the clock. On 9/11 as we listened to the radio the rumors were rampant on where they were going to use a hijacked plane next. We can see the Chicago skyline from the yard and now every plane that went by was headed towards the city. We later learned that all flights were ordered to land at the nearest available airport and that is why the skys were so full but I remember thinking and the talk over the cb`s as people pointed out another plane and wondered if that one was the one headed to the city. I remember the skys eventually emptying and as I left that day the only thing in the air were seagulls and fighter planes circling over our heads.
I remember my wife, 7 months pregnant, standing in the driveway when I got home and being thankful that because she was, someone from her office was making the monthly business trips to NY and not her for once. It tore her apart until she was able to get ahold of her employee the next day. My inlaws, both Navy retirees, came over and I recall my mother in law who was stationed at the Pentagon sitting in the other room on the phone trying to find out if people she knew were safe.
I remember going to work that night with absolutely no sleep and watching the tv`s at work with the rest of the drivers and the story was coming together about Al-Qaeda and the hijackers and someone remarked that "Looks like we are going to have to go kill some people."

Making my 1st delivery(NDA letter) to 1301 Richland Ave. All the mobile home salesman were gathered around the tv in the front room. Then I watched the second plane hit on TV at my 2nd or 3rd stop. After that, it was bedlam at every stop for the rest of the day.

I was working on preload. When I got home around 9am I turned the tv on to sit down in my recliner and take a nap. Needless to say I didn't take my nap.

Oh, you mean 9/11.
Parcelin'. Delivering to one of my major accounts. Receiver told my a plane just hit the WTC. I figured it was some small plane, and he didn't know.
I remember texting in my m/ls later and adding, "this seems so unimportant".
What a day.

We were in our PCM and nobody even knew what had happened until we arrived at the first stop which had a tv going. It still chills me to the bone to see those videos.

I dread the day something like this happens again, and I (we) am somehow expected to finish our day as scheduled instead of getting off the road and home.
