Why Did They Do That?

Ever wonder why the folks who drafted the Bill of Rights in the First Amendment wrote:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

But then immediately followed writing that by then writing in the 2nd amendment:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Why did they do that in that manner?

Because the 2nd gurantees the first.

Without the 2nd Amendment, the Constitution is nothing but a piece of paper.

This is one of those historical truths that tends to make liberals feel very uncomfortable. Our founding fathers knew that the final defense against a totalitarian government was an armed populace.
