Integrity

Respecting the authority of those over you.

Respecting authority is a great measure of your personal integrity.

Some recent discussion threads here on the brown cafe reveals that many who post here appear to struggle with respecting the authority of those over them.

I suggest the following reasoning with respecting authority and suggest this as a model for personal chain of command.

We are all first and foremost under the authority of the Creator.

Second we are under the laws of the land and the regulatory bodies.

Then, in a corporation we are all under corporate policy and corporate directives.

Finally, we are under the one who directs us day to day, usually a part-time or full-time supervisor.

There are specific ways and specific times to challenge or question those in authority over you without disrespecting their authority.

The contract says to treat mgmt with dignity and respect and they have to treat me the same way. I'm more than happy to say, "Good morning, sir," to my <male> coworkers and my supervisors. I have no problem saying, "Sure," when asked to perform a reasonable task. I also have no problem at all saying, "Have a good day!" as I'm on my way out.
