A wealthy Bonney Lake, Wash., pilot who used money, alcohol and manipulation to molest more than a dozen boys has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Weldon Marc Gilbert, who worked as a pilot for UPS, was sentenced Monday in Tacoma by U.S. District Judge Benjamin Settle.

In a sentencing memo, prosecutors wrote that the 49-year-old Gilbert remains "incapable of real remorse" for the damage he did to at least 17 boys as young as 10.

United Parcel Service Inc. projected moving 400 million packages in the peak holiday shipping season, “up slightly” from a year earlier when it scrapped a forecast because of the recession.

Dec. 21 will be the busiest day, with volume of 22 million shipments, Atlanta-based UPS said today. That would match UPS’s record 2007 forecast. The world’s largest package-delivery company doesn’t report results after releasing its estimates.

Bullish comments out of UPS this morning. Although we’ve been seeing some very weak data out (and commentary) of the transport sector, UPS (UPS) is bucking the trend. They think the recovery is real and could continue throughout 2010 as volumes surge. At a meeting in Singapore UPS CEO Scott Davis made the following comments: “I think we will go back to see positive volumes next year as the economy improves…I believe the recovery is real, but it is gradual. It is sustainable but vulnerable.”

United Parcel Service Inc (UPS.N), the world's largest package delivery service, expects growth in its volumes next year as the global economy gradually recovers, its chief said on Wednesday.

UPS CEO Scott Davis told Reuters the company will hike shipping rates for 2010, which follows a similar move by rival Fedex (FDX.N), and it will announce the size of the hike later this month.

"I think we will go back to see positive volumes next year as the economy improves," Scott said in an interview, ahead of a meeting of Asia-Pacific corporate and political leaders in Singapore.

E-discovery is a huge expense, even for big companies with lots of resources. United Parcel Service, Inc. is no exception, and its legal department had enough.

So the Atlanta-based shipping company managed to save millions of dollars by outsourcing document reviews to companies both here in the United States and overseas. But the mounting scrutiny of document production by opposing counsel and courts, as well as new federal rules relating to e-discovery, convinced UPS that it needed to do more to get costs under control.

The company decided to hire a national e-discovery counsel, and it had to be a firm willing to abandon the billable hour. "There's a tendency to be comfortable with what you know," says UPS chief litigation counsel Norman Brothers. "This took a leap of faith."

UPS’ executive team and board of directors rang the morning bell at the New York Stock Exchange Friday, paying homage to 10 years of UPS stock on the public market.

Chief Executive Scott Davis said it’s been a “volatile 10 years” since the company went public in what at the time was the biggest domestic initial public offering.

But he said having publicly traded stock hasn’t changed the 102-year-old company’s determination to manage for the long term, despite outside shareholders and Wall Street analysts eyeing each quarter’s results.

United Parcel Service Inc., the world’s largest package-delivery company, is looking for acquisitions to bolster its supply-chain and freight-forwarding units, Chief Executive Officer Scott Davis said.

UPS has made more than 40 purchases in the past decade, and there are “likely to be some more” in the coming year, Davis, 57, said today in an interview in New York. China, India and the Middle East are at the “top of the list” for expansion, as is the health-care industry, he said.

“We’re strengthening ourselves in emerging markets, the Middle East, Asia, areas where we think we can invest and grow,” Davis said.
