    Welfare

    Speaking of welfare....

I heard the news today that Louisiana is trying to introduce a bill (after several tries) that will require drug testing to receive your welfare check.

One of the domino effects of a bill like that would be to make the druggies move out of your state. Maybe it'll pass this time around.

    Re: Welfare

Problem with a Bill like that, is those druggies will call it a disease (which it is).
So, the state will need to treat them first (pay for rehab).

And even after rehab, they have more then a good chance being returned to 1 if they fail the drug test.
So, not only will the state provide welfare, but also housing and food !

    Re: Welfare

My first thought on this is " YES!!!". My second thought is who is going to pay for the drug tests? They aren't free, someone has to pay for them.
I can see other possible domino effects.
One would be an increase of criminal activity to acquire the money the druggies will be loosing.
Another could be an increase of emergency room visits to get drugs they don't have money to buy them with.
One more could be having to add one more state agency to monitor the program.

Besides all that, I don't want La's druggies coming to Texas, we're right next door.

I do not care how you try to twist it, drug abuse is not a disease. Drug abuse is a choice a person makes. Anyone that consciously uses cocaine( in any of it's forms) or heroine or even recreational pot for that matter, do so knowing what it can and will do to them. The misuse of some legal drugs is often tied to an injury or illness but does not make the misuse a disease.

    Re: Welfare

I did work p/t in a liqour store, and welfare day (when checks arrived), we always needed an extra person in the store.
Another observance I made, is on welfare day, the casinos are full, and the slot machines in bars are, too.

It's disapointing to see these welfare chics spend "their government" money on gambling, then need to feed their kids KD dinner all week, or go to the foodbank.
The only benefit, I seen out of them gambling, is the fact, that the province gets a big share of their money back ! LOL

And btw : Seen the same in Florida, too.
Was wondering why the casino was so packed on a certain day we attended, then I heard that those checks arrived that day.

It's an addiction, just like alcohol (which is a disease). !
That's why they have rehab centers !
If it was only that simple for them to quit, I think they would in most cases.
But, no , when the money runs out, they need to steal or sell things. It's a horrible life.

Probably much more addictive then cigarettes, which is hard to imagine.

    Re: Welfare

Where do you think the crackheads or obese go when welfare turns them down? SSI!! Come driver around Syracuse, NY, or any other major city on the 3rd near an Aldi's. Just ask where they get their money, "their check" as they call it. SSI!

And that is why there should be no checks, just vouchers that can only be redeemed at certain places for certain foods, liquor stores and casinos damn sure wouldn't be on the list.

I know a woman who uses rehab as a vacation that NYS pays for. They have a turnstile with her name on it. When she get out, she runs for the nearest crack house. All paid for by SSI. She had NO interest in staying clean. Just in keeping those checks rolling in. She will prostitute herself for crack, too. It is a horrible life, but one they chose.

    Re: Welfare

I lived on the west end of the city of Calgary, before I moved here.
The Indian Reservation was just a few miles west of me.
So, basically the first bar and liquor store for them was near me.

You should have seen the district after welfare day.
Drove to work in the morning, and everywhere were drunken passed out Natives laying around in the grass fields.

But the city, like many others grew, and it grew more out west too, so then, it became someone elses problem.
