ASTAR employees to picket UPS Atlanta Business Chronicle
Workers for ASTAR Air Cargo, formerly
DHL Airways, are planning to picket
United Parcel Service Inc.'s headquarters in Atlanta on Thursday in protest of
UPS'
deal to takeover air transportation for Deutsche Post's DHL express, deferred and international package volume within the United States.
The workers, represented by the
Air Line Pilots Association International (ALPA), will picket from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 24. The Air Line Pilots Association International, which represents the ASTAR workers, claims
UPS' deal will lead to 10,000
job cuts.
ASTAR pilots every night carry about 50 percent of the weight out of Wilmington, Ohio, for DHL, ALPA said. DHL is a 49 percent owner of ASTAR, which has provided air cargo services to DHL for about 30 years.
UPS (NYSE:
UPS) expects to have the contract with DHL Express wrapped up by the end of 2008. The deal will likely be for 10 years and could generate up to $1 billion annually in revenue,
UPS has said. The agreement would not involve the pick-up or delivery of DHL packages to their customers, only the transport of packages, primarily between airports, in North America.
